Forums - Nintendo - 'Third-party releases for WiiU must use the gamepad or not release at all'

DKtf didn't use it for anything so 3rd party don't have too. But even just having a map on there made games like AC IV a joy to play

It depends on the game IMO. Assassin's Creed? We don't need to have GamePad functionality for that.
Minecraft? Now whereas we don't need it, it has way more obvious reasons to have GamePad functionality.

^This , Minecraft is one of the few games that fans specifically requested to have on Wii U WITH GamePad functionality simply because it's SOOOOOOOO easy to tell that the game would be better with the crafting table and other menus appearing on the second screen

The gamepad acting as a second screen was a big seeking point for Nintendo and I have seen with my nephew how good it is in reality, since he is not bound by the TV to play games. For Minecraft though, it is completely idiotic that you can't use the second screen for inventory when playing on the TV, since the gamepad would be perfect for it.

Why would MS ever want to make the WiiU version the best one? Of course it would be a lazy port...

The editor sounds a little butthurt because the Wii U version didnt fit all of our expectations.
Using the gamepad would have made Minecraft have a slightly different and possibly better gameplay experience, and I guess many of us expected this since it took years for the game to appear on a Nintendo platform.

Late 3rd party ports have extra content most of the time. I don't think I saw that many complaints about ill-usage of the gamepad on just in time ports (of the few that even happened, lol).

is just one feature of the system. developers dont neeed to use it.
is like every game on ps4 have to use the mouse thing on controller...

I can only understand that mentality if you're getting a lesser game than the other consoles. A game that is on par should not receive serious complaints, especially when it's for a console that is well behind the leader in sales. No one is entitled to third-parties using each console's respective gimmick.

I especially hate the ignorant "lazy devs" rationalization. If programmers aren't working on one thing is almost certainly because management wants them to work on something they deem more important.

That's the thing. We are getting a lesser game. The X1 and PS4's versions of the game are over 30x bigger. We're getting a lesser game and expected to pay more for it (yes, I know, texture packs, but if you don't want those texture packs, you shouldn't have to pay for them.)

But the ps4 and xb1 are marketqqore powerful than the Wii U. The Wii U release is a lot more in line with the versions its hardware is closer to.

The higher price is because they know its a limited market and so sales will already be limited. If it is that or no release at all I presume Wii U owners generally just don't want the game?

I do find the touch screen strange though. I'd have thought they could port the Vita interface, but I guess its not that simple.

Personally gamepad usage doesn't bother me at all. Most my Wii U games I prefer on a standard controller.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

I think minecraft is a bit of a special case honestly, because inventory management and crafting are such a natural fit for the gamepad that it was just sort of expected to be there. Combine that with the fact that it is a very late port which is more expensive than on every other platform and you have a fanbase that is justified in asking for additional features imo.

In general though, I think there's no reason for third parties to be churned for not incoorperating the gamepad. Yet I don't think it's quite as black ans white as 'have gamepad features or don't release it' either.
I think it's fair to point out that gamepad use would have been welcome if it's usefulness practically stares you in the face.
After all people also get angry if the ps4 and PC versions of a game are unneccissarily locked to an inferior performance to 'ensure parity' because it wastes the potential of their machine. I feel like omitting obvious gamepad features is similar, in that it is an obvous waste of recurces that were already there.

That said, third parties should not have to shoehorn in some kind of gamepad support just for the sake of it.

The gamepad is there should devs choose to implement it, but it should not be compulsory. I dont like Minecraft but im thrilled there is a popular 3rd party game on Wii U, it sends out a strong message, especially if it sells well. People should be happy the game is there instead of complaining, if you are a minecraft fan and own a Wii U only then support it.
