Forums - Gaming - Which Japanese RPG Had A Really Good Story?

Easily FFVII for me ...

It's got a vast background and the best execution for the story line ...

Tales of Symphonia (Tales of in general, but I like Symphonia's story the most)
Baten Kaitos

Really, a good percentage of JRPGs have really good stories.

Persona 4 Golden was the best JRPG I've ever played with the best story I'm ever experienced.

Skies of Arcadia has a really rich world. I also like to storyline if the Phantasy Star series on the Mega Drive but my favorite when it comes to scale and depth if that of Panzer Dragoon Saga.

The Xeno series (Saga, Blade, Gears)
The Fire Emblem series. Practically all of them. So far, mainly Radiant Dawn and Awakening IMO.
The Shin Megami Tensei series and it's spinoffs (Persona, Devil Survivor, Devil Summoner, etc)

Also all the Golden Sun games. :D

Xenogears

Me and my "rpg mates" consider this as a fact. We dont argue about it. Its on a different level than the other rpg stories.

After Xenogears, there are quite some good stories around like the guys here mention.

''Hadouken!''

FF 9 and FF 10.

Honestly, Final Fantasy Tactics. It was filled with betrays, assassinations, sacrifices, false hopes, political intrigue, and hidden figures trying to manipulate the events behind the scenes. It touched on class inequalities and the power of religion in politics. It pitted friend against friend and had several very sad moments. Despite the chibi art, it was mature and bloody.

The central theme of how the actual heroes, and the actual events, often get left out of the history books was also interesting.

Xenoblade

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Most of the Xeno series, Ni no Kuni, FFX (I'll argue to the end of time that X has a great plot, even if the localization issues distracted at times), and so on, off the top of my head. NnK has some gameplay problems though, be warned. If you're gonna play it make sure you're willing to sink 40 hours into a game that doesn't get any deeper in combat.

Xeno series? like xenosaga? i couldnt get into xenoblade so i dont really know if the story gets any good, but xenosaga's story is pretty weak, pretentious and just dumb. Dont get me wrong, as a big FF's fan (and jrpgs in general) i do enjoy silly, over the top  stories but i imho opinion FUN doesnt make it for a good story.

Ni no kuni story is like the game's weakest aspect, is basically the kind of stories that you read to your kids when the are going to bed.

Anyway, i know there arent that many games with good stories out there, but we shouldnt low our standars U_U

Hey you can believe what you want but general opinion of Xenosaga is pretty damn high - not mindblowing like the reaction to Xenoblade and gears but still pretty good - and critics and fans alike hold NnK's characters and plot in high regard. Remember that NnK was up for GotY and Drippy was up there for best character, and it sure as hell wasn't the gameplay that lead to either of those. It being childlike is part of the charm, so I don't know what to tell you if you feel the plot is too kiddy for you other than "general consensus disagrees."

Regardless of your opinion of Xenosaga, Xenogears is still on many GOAT lists to this day and Xenoblade is up there pretty often too, so the Xeno series is a good place to go for good story-driven JRPGs.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!
