Honestly, Final Fantasy Tactics. It was filled with betrays, assassinations, sacrifices, false hopes, political intrigue, and hidden figures trying to manipulate the events behind the scenes. It touched on class inequalities and the power of religion in politics. It pitted friend against friend and had several very sad moments. Despite the chibi art, it was mature and bloody.
The central theme of how the actual heroes, and the actual events, often get left out of the history books was also interesting.
