That is very subjective. For me, my $700 PC with an i5 4690k and a r9 280x surpasses the consoles big time in gaming, and I also get to use it for my schoolwork/browsing the web/etc. Much more value overall and worth more.

if it cost 700 dollars then I'd expect it to perform better, otherwise it's a piece of crap it cost that much and underperforms against a ps4. lol

yea, same here.

I have a slightly-expensive all-in-one computer. It doesn't have the best specs in the world( Iris pro graphics 4600, 8 GB Ram, intel i5 v Pro), but it does have bang-for-buck. Beats audio built in it, 1 TB space, 23" screen, it helps me do a lot of things easily.

Looks like olé type of people are having issues getting Fallout 4 to even start on their machines.

To those who say you need a monitor/os...

everybody needs an os, Linux won't run most PC games... That's 100$ more, however, on the other hand many can just upgrade their gpu and ram and they'll be up to date (I have an old i7 it's about as good as today's i5 and I could just put a decent video card if I wanted to play games on my work PC... It has 64GB of ram ... No need to upgrade this).

Even at retail prices it is $55 for Windows 7 (and consequently Windows 10.)

add the OS, keybord and mouse and optical drive ( because how the hell are you gonna install the drivers that will come with your peripherals) and you are already at 750$ US multiply that by 1.3 if you live in the free Canadian lands

Can I assume you have little to no experience with setting up computers?

There are many free alternatives to Windows as an OS, and anyone that installs Windows 10 currently can get a year of free usage out of it.
That leaves an erroneus addition of $250 for mouse, keyboard and optical drive?

If you plan to use mouse/keyboard for setup only and use the pc for just gaming, a cheap combo pack can be had for as little as $15, as for optical drive for installing drivers, it isn't needed, and most periperals these days don't actually have a CD because they submit the base drivers to Microsoft to be accessible via windows update.

And they can all be upgraded for free to Windows 10.

What's the catch here (I don't know German)? On Amazon.fr, it is much more expensive:

Some of the catch is that they need to be upgraded from other versions of windows on the HDD they're being installed to, but you can get around that if it's even needed by going to the root of the drive you're going to install onto and putting a folder there called Windows.old doesn't matter that it's just an empty folder, it should just allow you install these upgrade editions no problemo.

That is if you even get that issue at all, completely depends on the version of Win7.

You do know you need a previous version of windows to get windows 10 right? you do know it's free for 1 year right? where did I say that the keyboard, mouse and disk drive was 250$, here in Canada an OS is 100$. and if you are going to game on your pc why would you buy some cheap ass 10$ mouse or keyboard. Also before you give me steam OS or linux as an answer, know that Valve themselfs said that the steam OS wasn't a full OS but an OS geared toward gaming, and for linux good luck finding the linux version of you favorite programs.

Also maybe it just happened to me but the reason why I added the optical drive is beucause when I build my pc a few months ago I couldn't even connect to the Internet because the drivers for my network card were not up to date, so I had to get the disk drive from my old pc to use the disk included with my mobo and update using that.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

You can use the generic key given out during the insider program to activate windows 10 for the full free year, you can upgrade from even pirated versions of windows 7 to retail windows 10 for a full year, microsoft really don't care because they get to pip them at the post with a required payment in a years time, meanwhile in that year of Windows 10 usage, you could buy an earlier version of windows, such as 7 or 8 for cheap and replace the install at whatever time suits you.

Point is though, you don't actually need a previous version of windows to get it, that's a common misunderstanding.

Yes, which is what I said.

chapset said:

You implied it by listing a price of $750, which is $250 over OP's.

Because the majority of modern PC games can be played on gamepads, just about any gamepad, which most people already have.

SteamOS is geared towards just gaming, if you are building a PC just for games it's a viable option, it may not have as many caompatible games as windows but it still has over 1700, and hundreds are added every month, as for installing a vanilla version of Linux, a majority of windows applications can be used using software like Wine.

It's rare for a modern motherboard on a modern OS to not hahve compatible drivers out of the box, still, a bog standard SATA dvd drive is like $10 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA9AX3HB2661

Additionally, if you already had a computer/laptop prior to building a new PC, common sense would be to download the latest available drivers for the components you ordered, before building the new pc, you can even download them on your phone then connect your phone via usb to the computer and copy the drivers over.

As for the OS argument in general, you can pretty reliably obtain a licensed copy of Windows for as little as $20 these days, as shown in an earlier post, but let's be honest here, there's always the piracy option, too, for both the OS and the games.

By the way the OP overall price is 550$. See how quick pc gaming prices go up.

and please I don't know anyone buying a gaming pc just for gaming, that's the advantage of a gaming pc, you can do way more with it then a console.

And using piracy as an option as for why pc gaming is cheap is not a good argument, and you as a mod should be ashamed of using that. Am sorry but I will have to post that to ioi on his my space.

Steamboxes exist specifically because many people do buy and build pc's to put next to their TV and use for gaming / streaming, and Steam wanted to get in on that market while adding their own services to the space.

Title still says $500, op needs to update it to $550 it seems, even still, there are cheaper alternatives to what the OP listed, and the route of second hand components to drive that price down even further, too.

As for the last part, By all means be my guest, acknowledging the existance and prevelance of piracy in the PC industry, which is seen by many PC gamers as a viable option isn't against any rules, acknowledging it isn't advocating it, nor is it facilitating in it either.

But to be clear, the reasoning for your last paragraph seems more like a copout on your argument than a genuine concern, but hey.
