Forums - Gaming - 60Fps - is it really that important?

Is 60 fps just placebo?

Yes, you wont notice a big difference 98 28.32%

No!!!!!! 248 71.68%

It's 2015, we shouldn't be sold a recycled hardware that should have been sold to us in 2010. Progress is important for a better world. That includes hardware that last longer then 2 years. What a waste of resources.

I would take 60 fps over a higher resolution every time.

It's sad when you have a situation like Uncharted 4 where the dev understands the importance of 60fps in one section of the game but is too hesitant to make the full game 60fps out of fear of backlash or whatever is keeping the single player 30fps.

A good looking game with a smooth 60fps doesn't create as much sizzle as a better looking game with a meh framerate and that sucks. There's virtually no backlash when next gen games have framerate issues, but a 900p resolution... oh my god!

I'm ready for a new gen of consoles where we can get 60fps and maybe devs won't have to sacrifice for it.

It's more noticeable when you're actually playing the game. Also, it depends on the game. For a fighting game or racing game for example, 60fps is kind of important. It's probably the reason Mortal Kombat X for the 7th gen consoles was cancelled.

Just one of many. Every time a new game comes out and drops a couple of frames it's time to crucify the developers.
Much more than the 900p vs 1080p MGS 5 discussion.

How did 60 fps work out for Halo 5, seems it's not that much of a selling point after all. There was much more backlash over leaving out splitscreen co-op. I started Tlou remastered in 60fps yet switched to 30fps after a while. The improved shadows were more immersive than a faster framerate. And I actually didn't notice the drop down anymore after a minute at 30fps.

I have nothing against them adding a 720p60 mode next to 1080p30. That's probably still not enough to straight up double the fps but with some lod tweaks it shouldn't be hard to include. It should be even easier for cross-gen titles. Why not have the option in rise of the tr to play the 360 version profile at 720p60 on XBox One next to the 1080p30 version that drops to 25fps. Should even be easy for Fallout 4 with it's multiplat engine, drop to 720p60 at minimum details. I guess doubling the QA for 2 performance profiles takes too much time, plus it's not exactly bug free with just the one...

Yes, it is, especially when it's always shoved to the side for superficial things like resolution. It's frustrating.

Not every game NEEDS it, but it's nice to have it when a game feels better for it.

I'm now filled with determination.

Depends on the game. For high paced games, the added fps allows for smoother button input which really helps make the gameplay smoother. Games like smash bros, halo, or cod are examples where quick button input precision is needed for high level play. This is why smash bros on the 3ds has items move at 30 fps whereas characters are closest to 60 fps, it really make a difference. For other games like uncharted, framerate isn't critical, but it is nice for better cinematic effect. Things look and feel smoother. But it's not a bad thing for some games to have 30 fps

I personally think it's the complete opposite of sad. UC4 is an example of a developer understanding that their 2 game modes might benefit from different technical balances, and rather than forcing the entire game to conform to one balance or another, they've opted to optimize both to what they think best suits them.

Their decisions might not entirely align with my preferences (i'd have preferred the graphics take a larger hit in the MP in favor of 1080p/60fps, and based on what we've seen i'm not convinced with the AA method they're using in the SP), but i can at least appreciate the additional effort they're putting in to try and make the end product as good as possible (at least from their perspective).

First off, that was an epic burn lol Second, I honestly don't think 60FPS is a legit argument these days. It's pretty much just something to argue over. It's the "bit wars" of today's generation.

Yeah. Nothing new under the sun. Overblown "Console Wars" rhetoric dates back at least to the early 90s.

"Blast Processing makes games objectively better!" said the Sega fan.

"No, Mode 7 makes games objectively better!" said the Nintendo fan.

Meanwhile, I was enjoying both Super Mario World and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and thinking they both looked and played great.

And both games were 60fps! :D

Play a game with the option (e.g. Last of Us remastered) and you really see the difference. In fact when i tried it, it feels unplayable. But 30fps is not unplayable, when I'm playing one I gradually adjust.

But I can still tell what fps a game is when I play it for the first.

Everyone will have a different opinion, depending on things such as:

-Capability/development of brain (This does NOT mean you are stupid if you struggle to see 60fps)
-Visual equipment, TV/monitors, there are a variety of different hardware and software technologies that make displays unequal.
-Tendency of your favourite genres to use a certain fps

Btw I've just checked my Physical game collection of current gen (PS4 and X1) and every single one is 60fps. That surprised me tbh but I am somebody who values 60fps, but will play 30fps.

Well, yes and no. They scrolled at 60fps and sprites moved across the screen at 60fps, but the animation of the sprites themselves:

Definitely not 60fps.

Old 16-bit platformers with sprite-based graphics aren't exactly a one-to-one comparison with, say, a modern FPS.

Haha. Well played!

I'll take the scrolling at 60fps. Rayman 2 on Dreamcast the camera moved at 60fps, the animation was much slower, I don't even think it was 30fps. But it made something beautiful!
