Forums - Gaming - Why PS2 era graphics are my favorite

I think the PS2 graphics still stand up today and some games are probably better because of the limitations of the PS2. Silent Hill 2 is a fine example of this. We all what happened when that was updated... Other horror games benefited well from this too. So yeah, they're still good.

For me PS1/N64 graphics looks too old, but PS2 is good enough.

The reason why PS2 graphics were better, imo, is due to the way our brains fill in the missing data. Back in those days or even the PS1 days, nothing looked real enough. We had to use our imaginations which, in some weird way, helped them seem more realistic. When you watch a cut scene in MGS1, you're forced to picture what it would look like in real life. When you watch a cutscene in MGS5, you can actually SEE how fake it really is.

So what about when you hit middle ground? Like MGS2 / MGS3?

But Human Revolution's gameplay was pretty good, wasn't it? It still had an old school feel and not too much "modern" automated bs.
Maybe the enemy AI was too old school...

And the graphics were reduced and clean, too...

Talking about Deus Ex PS2: Wasn't the gunplay terrible because the original was created for mouse controls?

I think immersion in games is variable. The more realistic the grapics, the less believable they become. Of course, I think some things are outside of that paradox like water or the side of a building etc. Those things follow different rules but when we're talking about animation and life like animation of living things, we're quite a ways off from getting to the point of photo realism which is what's needed if we're to truly believe what we're seeing in a game.

I do like the fact that back in the day, especially ps1, more was left to the imagination and for some strange reason graphics seemed more dreamy due to the artistic style. Doom remake on ps1 is a good example of this.

i like the graphics on ps2 a lot more than lets say ps3/or 4.

its weird but they just seem to be more gameish graphics than nowadays " realistic"

There is to much focus on graphics nowadays and to little on design

Couldn't agree less.

360/PS3 level is the absolute minimum for me now as far as 3D graphics go.

Everything else is just too blocky with washed out textures. No thanks.
