So what about when you hit middle ground? Like MGS2 / MGS3?

I think immersion in games is variable. The more realistic the grapics, the less believable they become. Of course, I think some things are outside of that paradox like water or the side of a building etc. Those things follow different rules but when we're talking about animation and life like animation of living things, we're quite a ways off from getting to the point of photo realism which is what's needed if we're to truly believe what we're seeing in a game.
