I prefer manual saves. But also when you can save when you want.

It was kind of an extreme example, but I had that problem a lot when I played Persona 4 on PS2. I would get gutsy and decide to get to the end of a dungeon before saving instead of using an Escape Rope (or whatever Persona calls it). An enemy gets a first strike on me, uses the perfect combination to knock everyone down, and then everyone's dead before I have a chance to heal. Eventually I got the hang of it enough to keep those sorts of fights from happening, but I'm still not happy about it. So frustrating when I lose hours of progress just because I don't feel like backtracking constantly. I'm surprised my controller still works after all my raging. x.x
Ideally though, I like the game to have both. Skyrim gave you that option as I recall, though I'm sure there are more recent examples as well.

Actually thats the game I had in mind as well! I would try exploring dungeons and then encounter a Magus (I think thats the name) and they'd wipe my party out and I'd lose a few hours worth of progress e.e I stopped playing for a while after that happened once

I'm fine with either one. Though I very much like it when a game has both.
Really depends on the game.
Games like platformers, on-rail shooters, and strategy, turn based RPGS, I want auto-saving for every time I finish a mission.
Games like open world RPGs, action-adventure games, etc. I want to be able to manually save at any point I want if I'm feeling tired or like I've done enough, rather than try to press through another mission.
Also, I don't tend to like it when games have save stations or specific rooms you need to enter in order to save your game.
Especially ones all about exploration. It's a big reason that has stopped me whenever I try to go back games like say.... Metroid Prime 1 & 2, (haven't played 3, yet.) If I were able to save anytime, and anywhere I want, I'd probably would've already finished Prime 2.
Because if for some reason I feel like I've done enough for one session, instead of pausing, and saving the game, then picking up where I left off later, I have to travel through the same obstacles and paths I already went through to locate one room and then save. If that sounds like a nit-pick, I'm sorry, but that's just how I feel towards it.

I LOVE manual saving, I don't really know why but it feels good to know that I saved and when I'll play again I'll start from where I wanted...

Ah yeah, I did like how Xeno did it. I suppose it is just the pure manual save design I'm not a big fan of. Don't make me lose hours of progress for small mistakes. x.x
