Forums - Nintendo - What wrong with wii sales?

Leandrovisk, you kind of sound like you made it to the hardest level! 5?!

Be real, how can there be saturation when it's still sold out? That sounds so dumb!

To everyone else, you know Nintendo is hyping wii, underproducing what the public wants, and pushing consoles to April. (Nintendo can't produce enough of anything to save their lives!)

I'm pretty sure he's not from America so his arguments that the Wii is available in his area are moot to the conversation, that he can barely speak English(I am an American and can barely speak English, so forgive my grammar), and is an attempt to troll this post by telling half truths by claiming saturation in his country, while implying his country is America, and therefore riling other posters like yourself.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

So ioi is not updating OTHERS tonight, well thats quite interesting.

You lied to me.. =(

wow - i'm kinda surprised too - i guess Ninty didn't stockpile after all. Maybe for MK Wii launch to cancel out the GTAIV effect

I can only say that no additional (over the weekly figure) units were shipped to US for the week. Its still a significant rise over last week - but definitely a disappointment for the launch of such a big title.

We are getting pretty close to the end of the fiscal year (2 weeks left), so I think you'll see odd things coming from Ninty weekly figures.

Wait wait, if you acknowledge that it's supply constained in the US, hard to find, then are you suggesting they simply are producing very very little? I'm confused.

If they didn't put any more into the market, then they can't sell anymore, thusly the only "great" rather than "obliterating" numbers this week. If they are producing them, and aren't selling them, that's called stockpiling. They are producing more, but it's just speculation as to when they are going to release them. I fail to see how this is "damage control" rather than just "logic".

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

The Wii sold at a very high level this week; it almost matched the Nintendo DS, which would be an accomplishment for any console. To answer your question, Leo-J, there's nothing wrong with the Wii. Nintendo fans just like to think Nintendo's stock piling when the console doesn't meet their expectations. There's no secret factory out there pumping out 1.8m Wii's a month. If that were the case, Nintendo could have already met demand.

I'm not pointing you out directly, but your statement is... well it's wrong. They have to be producing 1.8 million Wii's, since that goes on the financial records, and to lie is illegal, and I hardly believe they would lie about something so unimportant. Lying about how much money you made would at least be worth going to jail over. Also, if they sold every single console they made, where did all the Wii's come to during Christmas last year? And if they did stockpile last year for Christmas, where did those consoles come from, since they started at only 1.2 million a month, and they sold about 19 million up to the end of 2007, or about 1.3 million a month.

For everyone else saying "oh they aren't stockpiling," look at this graph. Note that right after the fiscal year ends (which is around March 31st), sales spike. Once Nintendo knows what it wants to ship this fiscal year (which I believe is 24 million total), they're not going to surpass it by much. They are merely aiming to hit it on the nail. Then they'll start shipping more after that, and start the fiscal year off with a bang.

Also, they have to stockpile for those random territories they are planning on launching in, and they do (whether you want to believe it or not) have to stockpile something for the holiday season. If they start early, they won't have to take as much out each weeks. And trust me, they have to stockpile for Christmas sooner or later.

If they would sell 1.8 million a month from here to the end of the year, of course they would have the same amount that they would if they sold 1.5 million a month and then sold 3 or 4 million in Nov/Dec. But people buy way more accessories, games, controllers, etc during the holidays, and it's not all that unlikely someone who buys one now might not bother getting so many accessories (where a lot of money is) even though they still got a Wii. People are practically impulse spenders for Christmas (especially relatives looking for a good gift), so they're likely to buy more of that stuff that isn't needed (like those Wiimote  accessory TennisRaquet/Bat thing) when they buy a Wii. It makes sense.

The PS2 sold brilliantly for many years (and still is), and during the first year after launching in US/Others, there were some minor supply issues, but I bet they were still stockpiling some for Christmas, and even when they weren't having supply issues I bet they made more than they needed and stockpiled for Christmas. Because when the holidays come around, you can't just flip a switch and produce the 8.65 million for Nov/Dec (link). 1.8 million wouldn't even cut it.

So I agree with shams, we're probably going to see some strange things from Nintendo in the next few weeks. Also, just remember that if Nintendo is able to beat the PS3/360 (combined even) during GTA4 week/month, imagine the bragging rights! But without stock, they won't be able to do it.

And Riot, I need your Brawl FC.

It could be they might be getting ready for a korean launch ......

Nintendo and Activision have submitted Wii games to the Korean Game Ratings Board.

The Wii has been a hit in Japan, Europe, Australia, the Americas, and now it may soon be hitting the Korean market as well.

Nintendo has applied to the Korean Game Ratings Board for Wii Sports and Wii Play, two titles that have been the cornerstone of the Wii's sales success. Adding fuel to the fire is the news that third party publisher Activision has also received ratings for two titles of their own which were unspecified.

The Korea Times speculated that this was a strong sign that Nintendo was planning to launch the Wii sometime before Children's Day, a holiday that South Korea celebrates on May 5. Nintendo of Korea, however, declined to comment, with public relations official Kim Sang-yean stating, "we will make an official announcement once we are all ready."

However, Nintendo will face ongoing piracy issues when the console launches in that market, as they already do with the Nintendo DS. The Korea Times reports that pirated copies of DS software titles are widespread, the legitimate sales of which are the principle way game companies earn profit. They point out that even without the Wii officially released in the country, many game stores are already selling imported versions of the console with special chips installed that allow the play of pirated game discs.

Last month, Nintendo of Korea released a statement regarding the effect that piracy was having. "Korea is an important market for Nintendo, and Internet piracy is seriously affecting the growth of the video game industry in the country," they said. "The unprecedented momentum enjoyed by Nintendo DS and Wii makes Nintendo an attractive target for counterfeiters. We estimate that in 2007, Nintendo, together with its publishers and developers, suffered nearly $975 million worldwide in lost sales as a result of piracy."
