Wait wait, if you acknowledge that it's supply constained in the US, hard to find, then are you suggesting they simply are producing very very little? I'm confused.
If they didn't put any more into the market, then they can't sell anymore, thusly the only "great" rather than "obliterating" numbers this week. If they are producing them, and aren't selling them, that's called stockpiling. They are producing more, but it's just speculation as to when they are going to release them. I fail to see how this is "damage control" rather than just "logic".
