This week’s issue of Famitsu features an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka.

At one point of the discussion, Tezuka addresses the series’ future in which he states: “We will continue to make 3D and 2D Mario games, but I want to make one that even exceeds New Super Mario Bros.”

Famitsu then asks if there is a particular plan in mind. Tezuka only offered up the following: “I can’t say anything concrete yet, but you may see it within a few years.”

It also sounds like Tezuka has interest in working on a non-Mario title. He told the magazine: “I also kind of want to seriously work on something other than Mario.”

“Doing this now at the 30th anniversary [of Super Mario Bros.] is really putting some more of that creativity into the players,” says Miyamoto. “But at the same time, we as the developers feel that it’s time for us to move in a new direction, and we’re preparing to work on the future of Super Mario from here on.”

It looks that Nintendo will work on some new type of Mario 2D game, no more NSMB. Great news!

Good. I like NSMB and NSMB2, but the console versions were mediocre imo.

As great as the NSMB games, they started getting stale for my tastes.

C'mon man, one must have higher standards in this industry.

New Super Mario Bros U was good but hopefully he looks Super Mario World and expand it.

The 2 last Marios Tezuka directed was Super Mario World 1 & 2 (in which Miyamoto was only producer), the last Zelda he directed was Link's awakening (in which Miyamoto barely contributed, Tezuka was the real mind of the gameboy Zelda game).

The guy clearly can do better than the New Super Mario bros games...
