Sunshine 2 or 64-2 adventure style.

I want a 3D Mario that plays like 64 (no time limit, no poles, stars or some other objective to get) and takes place in an alternate steampunk Mario universe. The main villain can be a clock-king style of robot that builds bowsers to stop Mario from getting back to his own universe.

I'd die to see a sequel to Mario Sunshine

Hub world with open exploration, a la 64 and Sunshine. I want that so, so bad. The Galaxy games were great, and 3D World was fun (if a huge step backwards in every way imaginable), but I don't like linearity in my 3D Mario games. That's what the 2D ones are for. And as long as I'm dreaming, make the hub world really big and make it like an adventure game with abilities and whatnot. Super Mario Adventure, man.

Unfortunately for me Nintendo and just about everyone else prefers a linear, simplistic Mario, so I'm out of luck.

Don't lose the hope. 3DWorld was not the huge hit Nintendo expected, so the message was clear: not to continue with the same style 3DWorld.

I love the Galaxy games and 3D World, but I think it's time for another nonlinear 3D Mario game! 13 years have passed since Sunshine's release after all.

Something quite open and adventure-like like Sunshine. Don't know what gameplay mechanic they'd go with though. I'd settle for Galaxy 3 if needs be. Although it kinda feels like they saturated that!?

3D Mario, to me, is this game that always comes out with the latest, greatest, concepts. To see a 3D Mario game that doesn't do anything new, would kill a part of the franchise. I want to see something new, something interesting. I think 3D Mario on NX will blow our minds.

How about a first-person Mario game?
