In an interview with Fortune, Miyamoto — who oversees Nintendo’s Software Planning & Development Division — stated that the company has received a lot of offers to pursue film opportunities in the past, but has been reluctant to pursue them due to inherent differences between movies and video games.

Miyamoto said:

“As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company, we’re starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that—and we’ll potentially be looking at things like movies in the future.”

“We’ve had, over the years, a number of people who have come to us and said ‘Why don’t we make a movie together—or we make a movie and you make a game and we’ll release them at the same time?’,” Miyamoto told Fortune at this year’s E3.

- On games tendencies of emulating film:

“Because games and movies seem like similar mediums, people’s natural expectation is we want to take our games and turn them into movies. … I’ve always felt video games, being an interactive medium, and movies, being a passive medium, mean the two are quite different.”

- In the June Earnings there was a statement, which seemed buried, that pointed at a Nintendo approach to film:

“For Nintendo IP, a more active approach will be taken in areas outside the video game business, including visual content production and character merchandising.”

Do you think this is a good idea by Nintendo? To open up their characters to the film industry?

Are you worried about how these characters will be translated to the big screen?

Discuss.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

It really depends on how it is done. Hopefully the guys up at Nintendo can at least have some say in how the movie should play out, mainly in regards to the characterization of their IPs.

J-Just... Make it good by the love of god do not make another SMB movie

Ignorance is bliss.

Other than the Mario one what other movies did they make?

Maybe we're finally going to get that Zelda movie that was teased by IGN years ago!

Oh, so you weren't blessed then...

I don't think there were any others (aside from the Pikmin shorts), but it still means they were in the movie world at some point.

Well then there you go. I wouldn't exactly call making one movie years ago to being in the "movie world".

Translation: We decided not to be so stubborn because we need the money, our traditional game business isn't pulling its weight any more.
