The World's First PS3 Hack - PS3 Game Dumping
Well, it's been done, on Thanksgiving none the less. Someone has figured out how to "backup" PS3 Blu-Ray discs. While backing up your games sounds like noble "research" it also opens up the door to copy PS3 games and distribute them via torrents or other download services.
I'm not one to promote or decry copying. I happen to think PSP homebrew is one of the brighter spots on the PSP. I also think that console companies would do well to embrace, rather than battle hackers. But what I believe is irrelevant, what you really want to know about is how the PS3 got hacked.

PS3news.com broke the story, covering the exploits and details of how it was done. For specifics, I recommend visiting PS3news. But in a nutshell, via the installation of a version of Linux, some backup software, and copy of Madden '07 three games have been successfully backed up, or "dumped", Madden, Resistance, and Genji.

Thre process isn't simple, but it seems easier than many of the PS3 hacks that are out there. Of course, if the PSP has taught us anything, it's that Sony doesn't take kindly to hackers. I'd bet even money on a new PS3 update that patches the problem being a requirement to play any new game in '07.

@jessman

Sony will never release a firmware after 2006 that can stop it. The ps3 is doomed.

maybe Sony should hire ppl like Dark_Alex to help make the hardware harder of hackers to hack. I heard some guy who hacked into the FBI was then hired by the US government to help them prevent that in the future

I'm with Leo-J here. The difference between the PSP's homebrew and the PS3's homebrew is that PSP's homebrew is easily accessible. You don't have to buy a "chip", you don't have to buy an R-4. You buy a 1.50 from EBay and you're pretty much good to go. From there, there are hundreds of sites that give good tutorials for it.

Plus there are bunches of sites that give PSP ISO's or CSO's. I know more people who have downloaded GTA: VCS than have actually bought the game.

Yeah, the PSP [sofware] is dying (or actually, dead).

But it did have a great start. Looking back, there was no indication that the PSP would be in the position that it is now. The DS Lite ruined the PSP.

PSP software is far from dead . When a game can pushh 700k first week , on any platform , its not called a failure ... man , Im so bored of this PSP failure threads , they make creators look stupid at best ... especially because this " failure " will sell more than the GBC lol ...

I dont think the PSP has fallen so much ,its just that vgchartz doesnt track too many of its games or too accurate .

I remember when we had Bunkum here and he gave us data about the monthly sales for say the Top 20 of each plattform .And the PSP sales were way higher than now with 1/3 the userbase .But when the page started to use its own data the numbers plummeted to the bottom .Except in Japan were we have too good data thanks to Media Create and Famitsu and the machine cant just be painted as not selling a single game I think the machine is vastly undertracked in its software .

For example ,the PSP has in my country the Top 1 this week with PES2008 and has had some games as Smackdown in the Top Ten some weeks .

IN the stores its clear the product is moving although maybe not as fast as Sony would want ,but its nearly impossible to find some popular games as Metal Gear PO ,Disgaea Afternoon of Darkness ,Valkyrie Profile ,Crush etc .That means the shipped units are finally sold so not that bad .

Platinum titles and reduced prices units move at a quite good pace and arent ever tracked here .In the UK data we had that the PSP was a 5% of the full price market but a 15% of the budget price market for example .

Yeah , why dont we get the top 20 softwares anymore ? That would be cool ...

The PSP's hardware sales do not reflect how many people have bought a PSP as a legitimate gaming device, and you could argue that the PSP has not performed well as a handheld gaming system ...

From day 1, the PSP was another one of these "Trojan Horse" videogame systems being that it was trying to compete with Nintendo in the handheld market, Apple in the MP3 player market, and establish a new (pointless) video format with UMD. The problem is that some people bought into the PSP as a video/MP3-player and did not buy games for the systems.

On top of this, the PSP as a portable gaming device was poorly though out; it has a short battery life (compared to other handhelds) and most of its games are not well suited for "on the go gaming". When you combine this with how early and easily the PSP was hacked, more gamers were using the PSP to play SNES games than PSP games.

What this means is a large portion of the PSP's audience will never buy games for the system either because they have no interest in gaming or they will steal games anyways.

the situation is different in Japan, there are far fewer pirates, but many people still are using it primary as a multimedia device.
