People seem to forget that ReCore, Scalebound and Quantum Break are 1st party IP owned by MS, they are investing in new games that list also includes Ryse and Sunset Overdrive(when it comes to investing in new IP not 1st party).

MS bought bungie, then let them go at 2007, and bungie agree give Halo to MS. |
Okay....well point still stands. Bungie is it's own entity and Halo is Microsoft's.

If Microsoft never bought halo then how does it own the IP?
Also a decent chunk of you seem to be confusing what first second and third party exclusives mean. The point to my post was that ms does not risk money on creative ideas, they're clearly far more fond of buying there way to success instead as opposed to the other two major console platforms. |
NIntendo is debatable as they don't spend a lot of money, but Sony bought just as many studios as MS over the years. How is this any different?

They really need to learn how to make their own ips. I will enjoy tomb raider but this is twice now. A third time and they are making it blindly obvious that they can't make aaa ips on their own. Next year sony has the momentum...and their first party generally starts picking up during this third year. Time to get moving ms. When the third, second and first parties start to mount the natural ability to create ips will become noticable. This time it will be even more noticable since sony has vowed to make less ips this gen. |
I don't know. Microsoft has Gears 4, Recore, ScaleBound, Quantum break, Sea of Theives, Crackdown 3, Forza Horizon 3 (more than likely), Killer Instinct Season 3 (more than likely) coming out next year. I'm not trying to start anything, but I think Horizon or the last guardian won't make it next year for PS4 given Sony's track record. I think next year it will be Uncharted, street fighter 5 and ratchet and clank remake will be Sony's lineup next year.
Is Ori an IP owned by MS as well? That it's one of the most impressive games in years.

Yes
I'm still surprised Sunset Overdrive hasn't been announced for PC yet. Maybe this one will actually stay only on xbox? xD
they need to do good first party games, they are able to do
not desperately try to build an own game / Franchise, just to compete in special genre
it's totally fine, to get thrid party devs on board and use just money and development help, instead of building an own studio and take the risk for an new ip
Microsoft don't need an Driveclub or The Order 1886, just for the reason some mad Gamers can't shout about moneyhatting...
im glad they went for tomb raider and didn't build a bad uncharted clone, who would fail commercial and critical expectations

Those games are only first party because they own the IP, but those games came from ideas outside of Microsoft. In most cases those companies went to Microsoft for funding and Microsoft either published it and kept the IP. As i've said before, they might own a lot of IP's but they've never been able to create a hit themselves outside of Forza and Fable.

Why should a new IP have to be made by an owned studio? Sony and Nintendo have both published numerous new IPs developed by external studios, and everyone considers them "Sony/Nintendo New IPs". Why doesn't that apply to Microsoft? Why must every MS new IP have to be developed internally when that obviously isn't the case with the other two? |
Its not that it cannot be made by an outside studio, but when the series of games starts to dry up, Microsoft will stop dishing out money to third party. Their first party cannot deliver new ips, so they just pay for exclusivity or PC ports to bolster their ranks. Only Nintendo and Sony have the capacity it seems to create games from all angles, which is why it always seems like Sony is being showered with games when the droughts start for Microsoft.
