Forums - Sony Discussion - Square has become a Sony 2nd Party this generation

Well, Square's best days are long gone and they mostly make crappy games nowadays imo.

The last Square game I bought was Bravely Default and I was assured by critics that it was one of their best games in a long time. I don't want to know how horrible their other games are then. And let's be honest, the xbox and Nintendo fanbase don't really care much about their games otherwise they would have sold better on those consoles (I'm talking about current gen, not the nineties). Although Square seems to hold some sort of grudge against Nintendo for no reason at all.

They did acquire some nice franchises when they bought Eidos though, I'm talking about Square's output here.

Well they want the Japan market, Xbox has no presence at all on Japan, they dont see it as incredibly profitable to release on XOne and see an advantage on working marketting deals and such with Sony to be console exclusive. Also everyone pretty much know that the western gamers that like JRPGs buy Playstations, so once again it doesnt make much sense to release these types of games on XOne. Square is doing what makes sense.

Lets not forget Square has a part on the Tomb Raider XOne exclusivity (or timed exclusivity) deal, so theyre doing stuf that seens advantageous for them not cattering to one console or another, it just so happens that it makes 0 sense to release Japanese RPGs on XOne.

First it seens liek Square is finding theyre way again, theyre upcoming lineup is amazing considering theyre in house games and the studios they own and also from the studios they publish to. Second anyone that says Square hasnt released a good title in years (even tough its debatable that FFXIII and its sequels are bad games, they disapointed some ppl but they are very polarizing titles, some ppl realy like those games me included) have never played FF XIV, that game is simply amazing, and not only compared with other MMOs, its a fantastic game with an awesome story a soundtrack that migth be the best FF soundtrack ever, a vast world to explore and a bunch of nostalgia inducing elements character etc.

*insert inner Sony fanboy*

I see nothing wrong with this :)

Yeah, it makes sense to ignore the 18 million people in Japan owning a 3DS.

3DS games are a lot cheaper to develop as well. There's simply no way a PS4 mainline Dragon Quest game will make the same amount of money as a 3DS mainline Dragon Quest game.

Console games get more exposition than handheld ones  by default, number of unitis a game sold does not tell the whole story, you can increase the value of your company a lot more by releasing an awesome DQ 11 on a home console and selling half of what you would on the 3DS. It also would bring a lot of prestige back to Squenix wich would strengthen them on western markets and atract more investments, maybe facilitate some publishing deals with other studios. Lots of ppl dont even know a DQ IX (and X as well for an entirely different reason, the same one ppl neglect FF XIV, its an MMO) existed even tough its a massive sucess on the 3DS, press and general public opinion treat handhelds and home consoles very differently.

Must be nice to get bailed out in Japan like that. Nintendo usually has to do all the work themselves.

Can't help but wonder what Sony did to you, your gf and your puppy.

As far as his GF and dog go...Sony had sex with one and kicked the other. I'll let you decide which is which.

OP: Not surprising, they lead in sales by a huge margin. Going exclusive on PS means less work making another version with only a minimal loss in sales.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Companies don't make decisions based on that and if they do they're stupid and deserve to be bankrupt. Game developers should never be allowed to make big corporate decisions. Looking at you Miyamoto...

Ignoring a userbase of 18 million just because "it's a handheld" isn't a good explanation or decision. Fire Emblem: Awakening brought a lot of prestige back to the franchise and saved it from death.

It's only recent, but Square is certainly hoping on the PS4 train.

Ye sure man, game companies are not interested in theyre value at all, CD Projekts Red decision to go multiplataform by the cost of reducing graphical quality that it would otherwise have on PC wasnt because itd increase theyre exposition 10 fold and result in there stock values to shoot trough the roof during the whole period of the Witchers 3 development and even more after the release at all. DQ IX was exclusive to 3DS it sold a lot Im sure Square is happy with the return it gave them, but they clearly consider internaly that it didnt have the effect they expected it to have so they want to go back to home consoles, and theyre doing so full blown now with other titles as well. Will it work ? Maybe, but thats the logic behid the decision Square made.
