Forums - Sony - Sony: The Last Guardian needs to sell better than Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus

Considering how much has likely gone into TLG, yeah, I figure they'll need for it to do really well to get back the amount spent on the game, and I feel it may not be that easy. Maybe people may have been waiting for it for a long time, but I don't think that will equal big sales. Seeing it now, I wonder what it is people are so excited about this game, aside from it coming from Team Ico?

It being from Team Ico is enough reason though. This game will sell consoles though even if the sales themselves aren't stellar.

Have you played ICO? Or shadow of the collosus?

If you have, and enjoyed those games, then the pacing of TLG would seem just fine and perfect to you. Especially compared to ICO.

No, I have not. PS4 is the first Sony console I have ever owned. I'll check them out on YouTube, I see a lot of people talking about them, but I know nothing about. I guess it is similar to what was shown the other week.

Figured :)

No worries though, its usually easy to pick out those that have played team trico games and those that haven't.

The best way to describe TLG, is that its a perfect gameplay cross between ICO and shadow of the collosus. And I mean that literally. But you should look into those two games. There really is nothing out there that plays like those games. Nothing at all.

And that's saying a lot.

I certainly hope it's financially successful. I think that would embolden Ueda and his independent team to make future projects.

As far as I know Ueda is independent himself, he doesn't have a team. Gen Design was started by one of the lead programmers on Ico I think and is made up of some of the Team Ico guys that worked on Ico and SotC but Ueda doesn't work for them.

The game is not going to be finished by only 20 people that much should be obvious.

And you hate seeing managers "have the gall" to say that they want their own projects to be profitable? I find that to be an extremely weird stance to have, just like the "let developers do what they want"-opinion, you can't do that, there are certain things that are just completely financially unviable and the higher ups are there to weed out the projects that just don't work. These people are still paid by Sony so it's them that should accomodate to what Sony wants or is willing to accept and not Sony that has to work with what these devs want to make.

You misunderstand. The developer propose the game they want to work on. Its aproved if it fits with a business model. Its not very different from what happens already.

There is nothing weird about it. What i dont want is for higher ups to disrupt the development creativity so we dont have shoehorned stuff like other games have.

Yes they have to do what they are told cause they are workers, but if you tell them what to do, they wont have room to spread their creativity and you end up with a flat product that fails.

That may well be true to a degree but the thing with this game is that it was never planned to have a budget as big as it ended up having when it was approved, I'd say Sony is generally pretty good at giving devs freedom but if a project like this keeps dragging on I'd say it's more than fair to say that you want it to do better than its predecessors. Though this is of course also a task for the marketing team, which in Sonys case has failed in many cases before and a matter of a decent release date, I'd release it between July and early September or something, relatively quiet in terms of releases, close to E3 but not too close and before the big holiday rush happens.

Luckily he doesn't have any say in the development process. By now its clear that Ueda is not willing to compromise his vision in anyway, otherwise we would have seen a cut down version with steam punk guns by now.

It will sell what it sells. SotC didn't sell bad at all, nor did the collection. The budget isn't very high for this game, it doesn't have to be a cash cow.

not more than 2m or 2.5m that's for sure. just like bloodborne, it's going to sell good numbers.

Puzzle adventure games aren't very well suited to you tube viewing. You'll get an idea what it looks like and maybe bits of the story, yet the emtional connection and internal struggle of the characters, ie the magic of the games, will be lost. That's probably also why the reactions to the trailer are quite different from those that have played and enjoyed ICO and SotC to those that see it out of context.

This is one case where the lack of BC really hurts. The HD collection is awesome, yet only available on ps3 :(
I would buy it again in a heartbeat for ps4, yet I doubt Sony is willing to risk the backlash for another remaster.

That shouldn't be too hard. And Shu said it wasn't very expensive anyway

where did he say that?

I don't think that is a good enough reason, honestly. I also have a bit of a doubt it will sell consoles like others claim, but  we'll have to see.
