I think it's pretty simple, Some people have massive 360 libraries and might just like the idea of playing all their stuff over 2 or 3 new releases that won't provide nearly as much playing time.

Games with gold makes backwards compatibility different than your other examples. MS keeps giving out nice titles and it'd be nice to play them without dusting off the old 360.

Some of Sony's big announcements aren't even exclusives, and can eventually end up on xbox anyways.

with that said, as for entertainment value, I enjoyed sony's conference more mainly for shenmue 3 that I thought was never going to happen.

Also, people need to stop complaining about the current limit on the titles. at least there are 15 and there will be over 100 games by the end of the year.........when will we wee shenmue 3 though? that might take 2 or more years.

PS3 wasn't soundly beaten, ever.  People just acted like it was because Sony said they would overtake 360 within a year and move on.  Truthfully, the PS3 outsold the 360 almost every year except one since the day it launched, even when it cost $100-$200 more.  Did people not care about BC or did the price point hurt them?  It's not that simple.

*edit*  Also, I'm a PSP/Vita and DS/3DS owner.  I probably bought as many PSP games for Vita as I did Vita games for Vita since launch day!  And I'm still buying DS games for 3DS.  My most played 3DS game (according to the Activity Feed) is Advance Wars Dual Strike!!

I count it as a soumd beating because they managed to lose a almost monopoly and remained at last place most of the gen.

I know that you bought a lot of last gen games, but I usually don't like to get the examples on the forum because we represent a tiny minority in gaming. As an example, everyone went crazy with Shenmue 3 here. But mainstream gamers? They don't even know that this game is famous, because it's old and niche.

It would have been a megaton the year consoles released. 2 years later, its not as huge anymore.

I don't think it would be. It's a nice feature and I would love to have it on PS4 too, but it doesn't change a lot of things. Let's see some cases:

- Genesis had an add-on that allowed to play SMS games. Almost nobody had it.

- The PS3 and 360 had BC. However, almost everyone had a PS2 while nobody had an OG Xbox. So it should be an advantage for Sony, allowing people to play their PS2 games (we even had a big PS2 title, GOW 2, releasing after the PS3). This didn't saved Sony from getting soundly beaten.

- The Slim PS3 didn't had BC. Its launch with a better price point, even without BC, improved a lot PS3 sales performance.

So I think that what really makes difference for a consoles is price and games. People don't want to buy new consoles to play PS360 games, they want to play new gen games. I've used BC very rarely during the years. I played Gran Turismo 2 once on my PS2 just to see if it worked. On Vita, I used it to play half an hour of Monster Hunter and maybe one hour of GTA for the PSP. In both cases, it was because I got the games for free on PS+, but didn't played a lot yet.

It's a cool feature, of course. But it won't move a lot of units. We can say the same for Sony's conference. Shenmue 3 won't move units. Dreams, maybe. But the real deal for mainstream was UC4, Battlefront and the CoD deal.

Did any of those games have Achievements? Who wants to play games with no Achievements?

I agree.  It's hard to actually guage who "Won E3" because we're all geeks and we all have our bias.  Me, I'm a Nintendo lover (They failed me) and a guy that jumped on Xbox 360 and went crazy over it.  Just my preferences.  I've always been a huge fan of BC ever since the PS2 days but I realize that my opinions don't represent the majority.  I can only speak for me and I'm nowhere near the average gamer.  I buy all of the consoles and sometimes buy the exact same game multiple times, for example.  I wish it was possible to get a casual gamer to watch E3 and decide who won but that would be like getting a casual sports fan to tell you which team is the best.

That Shenmue 3 thing....I played (and still own) the first two but they were available for two consoles that sold really poorly and didn't even sell very well to those guys!  It blows my mind seeing people go crazy over it, now.  I mean one guy was bragging about it and couldn't even spell it.  He kept calling it "Shamue".  Internet, man.   It's a crazy place.

As for people that keep saying that this is a feature that nobody cares about, apparently people do want it. It has been suggested many times on M$es feedback page. Here's evidence of one suggestion:

https://xbox.uservoice.com/forums/251647-gaming-achievements/suggestions/6028587-backwards-compatibility-with-xbox-360

This is M$ doing great fan service. This gen, they are really listening and getting the community involved with the OS and features. M$ wants to make their fans happy, who cares what people think who probably won't even get an Xbone to begin with?

What? BC is awesome! Imagine if the PS4 could play PS3 games. That would be dang sweet. Remasters wouldn't seem so necessary for people who missed games from the previous generation if you can just take those PS3 games and play them on the PS4.

Be assured that if Sony had announced this and not MS, exactly this thread wouldn't even exist.

You guys need to stop with this strawman argument.  If Sony had announced this, MS fans wouldn't still be raving about it like it was a HUGE announcement.  I mean if the prospect of being able to run 10% of 360s library is this awesome, then the PS3's 90% must have blown your mind.

And for those who don't get it, or are willingly not getting it, this has nothing to do with downplaying B/C. It'll be a great feature when/if they can get it working for most games.  This is just a reality check for those who thought this was some huge announcement and may change the XBO's situation.   Do we really need to bust out the chalkboard, again?

hahahah, surely a crazy place. I have a friend that isn't exactly casual, but a mainstream gamer. He has a PS4, PS3 and Vita and usually play the most well know games. I would say that these guys are the majority. They aren't casuals (they buy a lot of games and play them as a hobby), but they won't play niche titles.

He only watched the Sony conference, so I will report only that. He was more excited about Uncharted, Star Wars and Final Fantasy. He liked Horizon too. He didn't knew the Shenmue series.

Hmm? Yes, because all MS fans are equal, right? And how do you know about the 10% and what about that 90%? And chalkboard? What? This sounds so insecure from your side...

I don't even know why you felt the need to make a thread. If there were dozens of hype threads for BC I would understand but in this case? In my opinion you are exaggerating way too much and this is also enriched with your competitive way of thinking, which screams console wars, competitional thinking, chalkboards... But yeah, let's destroy the hope for every MS fan out there. May they learn for now and ever, they messed with the wrong company. Xbox One is doomed, Sony will win. We should make a daily thread about it and use it in every thread imaginable.

*smh* "reality check"

I think it's a great feature and something I would want in a console. Going back to PC gaming one of the best things has been being able to go back and play old games but in 4k.

Actually now that I think about it on X1 I wouldn't be able to do that so it would kind of lesson the BC a bit.

its a good feature, but like alot of features, most people dont care. If they did WII U would be doing a hellof a lot better. And PS4/X1 not as much
