Forums - Gaming - Is SHEMUE 3 KickStarter a marketing campaign?

SONY has more than enough money to easily finance Shemue 3 as it does with tons of its gaming IP's and studio

Shemue is popular and legendary franchise but not as commercially viable as both the Shenmue's flopped and probably almost brankrupted SEGA

Also as an exclusive,Shemue 3 will be a huge win for SONY so i don't know why they don't just finance it themselves

IT seems a bit shady and is probably a way to advertise and spread the word for SHENMUE as a franchise as not many modern gamers might know about Shenmue.

It is actually a very good way to market the game and hype it up,So is SHENMUE KickStarter campaign a marketing ploy by SONY and SEGA?

It is also on PC. If SONY could, they would avoid that too.

Still have to think about it.

It looks like a way to gauge interest. The kickstarter campaign has a goal of $2 million, that is never going to fund a decent Shenmue 3 and why wouldn't it go to Xbox if Sony has no involvement in it? I think Sony is going to pump more money into this if the kickstarter goes through.

Yes, but who cares? Kickstarter backers can get the game for $29 if they pay in advance.

Shenmue is like Earthbound. It's old and despite having a vocal fanbase, there is no way of gauging the current level of interest. If it can raise the needed funds, then it has at least enough interest to work right. Sony put it in the conference in order to gain the friendship of Shenmue fans. Sorta of a token effort for now. Probably a bit more assistance will come if it actually gets the needed funding.

does it even matter man? This is the last chance literally, if this thing doesnt reach 10 million to be a true AAA Shenmue title we gamers proved we are bunch of vocal greedy Clowns ounce and for all

WHO CARES?!

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

My guess would be to see if people actually want it.

What we most likely are seeing and it's not the first time , is Kickstarter being used to gauge customer/gamer support ,for a game that has a backer .

Apparently during Itagaki's Kickstarter he talked about having 90% of the cost covered by investors and the 10% kickstarter amount had a twofold purpose one being to show that the interest was actually real and secondly to give people a vehicle to have an investment with the game and the benefits that brings.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

$2 million isn;t even going to be 10% of the production budget, and then there is the marketing budget on top of that. The Kickstarter is a spreading of the risk load, but it is also something to get the fanbase excited and to help pay for a bit of merchandising.

But also it's a way for everyone to back out if the goal isn't met (not likely in this case). For much beloved dormant franchises this might be a way to get some idea of public interest before actually committing to the game. Putup a Legend of Dragoon Kickstarter with a $2 million goal and if it doesn't make it it means not enough people care about it so the project gets canned before any substantial dev money is spent on it. Or make it anyway, because they want to, but give it a lower budget and smaller aspirations.
