Forums - Gaming - Is SHEMUE 3 KickStarter a marketing campaign?

This is really a confusing situation.

The most important thing to note, as other people have noted, is that the game would cost much, much more than 2 million dollars.

My guess is that Sony had pledged to heavily fund the creation of the game if it managed to meet its Kickstarter goals in return for console exclusivity. My guess is that they fully expected the game would get funded, and if in some crazy universe it didn't, Sony would find a shady way to pay for the rest of the Kickstarter campaign.

It's also important to note that other console versions aren't included in the stretch goals, which is usual for Kickstarter games like these.

So yeah, this might be some crazy marketing campaign. Or maybe it isn't. I have no idea.

Edit: As a potential idea, perhaps Sony is using the Kickstarter as a means to guage interest in the game. Perhaps they have a funding model that is dependant on how much money the game makes in the Kickstarter. So if, it makes 2 million dollars, Sony will fund it an addition 8 million, if it makes 4 million dollars, Sony will fund it with an additional 16 million -- or something along those lines.

What we most likely are seeing and it's not the first time , is Kickstarter being used to gauge customer/gamer support ,for a game that has a backer .

Apparently during Itagaki's Kickstarter he talked about having 90% of the cost covered by investors and the 10% kickstarter amount had a twofold purpose one being to show that the interest was actually real and secondly to give people a vehicle to have an investment with the game and the benefits that brings.

I think you are right and that trend is a dangerous one.

Done the right way with the best of intentions  it can be a good thing, especially for reintroducing older ips that due to their age or other factors aren't a good  fit when it comes to remastering.
Still human nature  tells me we will see some type of exploitation whether it's on purpose or not.
We are already seeing the nature and purpose of crowd funding being questioned and the answers seem to depend on whether it suits ones vested interest.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

You think Sony is going to jump head first into a series that REKT Sega?... I don't think so.

Yes, but who cares? Kickstarter backers can get the game for $29 if they pay in advance.

As long as it actually gets released. It might be a decade before it's actually seen.

Kickstarters are garbage.

Except when they aren't.  Not all Kickstarters are inherently garbage and to say they are is quite arrogant.

I didn't say the games are garbage, I said Kickstarters are garbage, and yes, I do think pretty much all kickstarters are garbage.

Also, look up the meaning of arrogant because you haven't used it correctly.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.
