What we most likely are seeing and it's not the first time , is Kickstarter being used to gauge customer/gamer support ,for a game that has a backer .

Apparently during Itagaki's Kickstarter he talked about having 90% of the cost covered by investors and the 10% kickstarter amount had a twofold purpose one being to show that the interest was actually real and secondly to give people a vehicle to have an investment with the game and the benefits that brings.

I think you are right and that trend is a dangerous one.

Done the right way with the best of intentions  it can be a good thing, especially for reintroducing older ips that due to their age or other factors aren't a good  fit when it comes to remastering.
Still human nature  tells me we will see some type of exploitation whether it's on purpose or not.
We are already seeing the nature and purpose of crowd funding being questioned and the answers seem to depend on whether it suits ones vested interest.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot
