I'm going to go ahead and say that I have absolutely no idea how well this will do commercially.

That said, I have a strong feeling that Nintendo will actively limit Mario Maker's potential by trying to ensure that its primary focus remains on making Mario levels.

The impact of these types of games is, in many ways, determined by how abusable the core systems are. The importance of LittleBigPlanet is a product of its intricate physics engine; the most awe-inspiring constructs in Minecraft are the product of abusing redstone circuits; and the genre known as the MOBA is the product of abusing triggers in Starcraft's level editor.

If all you can do is make Mario levels in this game, I can see it selling well for a few months, but I don't think it will ultimately live up to its full potential.

yes, this is perfect!

It's commercial success completely depends on Nintendo's marketing. If they give it the Splatoon treatment, it will sell very well.

Eh, User generated content is not my thing, or at least making levels myself. I do love playing LBP levels, with my brother, from the community just cause it is mind blowing some of the stuff people achieve. For this however, I have not bought nor played a 2D mario in a long long time so I cannot say I am intrigued by it. If it has multiplayer (I haven't kept up with new about it) it does sound like a great time with friends.

It's a big sleeper for the Wii U certainly, akin to Splatoon.

it looks better than i thought, glad there not just sticking to 8bit style. However this is something that should have happened years ago. Should have been on Wii where the numbers could really support this(actually maybe the online woudl not have been up to snuff). Or Wii U launch title instead of another NSMB game

well...what else do you want it to do?

I think the install base is limiting it IMHO.

All this game needs is proper marketing. Parent and child. Old school to new school. Add Nintendo charm twist = sold.

What I guess I'm trying to get at is that games like these are successful in part because of word-of-mouth advertising. I think it's why games like Minecraft and LittleBigPlanet have fantastic legs.

Say, for example, someone was able to somehow mess with the engine of the game well enough that they managed to make an 8-bit classic RPG in the game. That person could then upload it to Youtube so that a lot of people could see it. Those people then think, "Wow, that's really amazing. I didn't know you could do that with that game." And then they go out and buy the game.

I also think this game would benefit greatly from a twenty dollar price point -- or even a free-to-play model. At a lower price point, more people would buy the game and it would build a community that would be beneficial to the game in the long run. At 40 or even 60 dollars (which is what Amazon has it listed at -- yikes), the appeal is too limited for the investment.

Since the last time we saw the game, it seems like a lot more freedom has been given. I no longer have any fears about the game being limited in any way, it offers unlimited possibilities. It's an incredibly strong base engine, perhaps the best for 2D platforming ever created (and there's three of them!) and people are already very familiar with Super Mario. And lets not forget the Gamepad, it's perfect for this game, absolutely perfect.

My prediction: at least NSMBU numbers, so 5 million at least. It's a killer app.

If it gets good marketing, especially focusing on the flexibility of the creation features, it will easily sell a lot, it also helps that it has Mario in the name and it's 2D (2D Mario tend to sell more than the 3D ones).
