It's contract work. If I pay you to come to my house and fix my deck, I'm not "money hatting" you, I'm paying you to do a job. Also Bayonetta 2 does not exist without Nintendo's funding it. Platinum Games doesn't have the money to finance these games, they are not a publisher, they are a contract studio. Try to understand the difference. |
Could have gone to Kickstarter to ask for the funds and cover the existing needs with a third party financer like Bloodstained is doing. The exclusivity deal was a kick in the nuts for fans who don't want or care for the Wii U.

Yeah plus it sold poorly, so you're probably right. I wonder why they'd consider making another exclusive for the console then? |
1) Bayo sold decently. They probably made some profit off of it because of a couple things a) Nintendo paid for exclusivity and b) It's not like it was a super long game. Were not talking Skyrim here. There were some breathtaking action sequences, yes, but the combat was pretty much the same the whole game and it didn't take more than 15 hours to beat each game (if I remember correctly) so I can't imagine they spent a huge amount of money on it.
If it truly took them 5 years to make, I seriously doubt that they were fully developing it for that long (3, at most I would think).

Like they are doing with Microsoft on Scalebound? Are you equally upset about that?

Kickstarter works for games that are visually poor (anotherwords, old school) like Bloodstained or for games like Yooka Laylie (or however it is spelled) because they have (probably) way less hectic battle sequences in the games, therefore not driving the cost way up. Most games on kickstarters are using ancient looking game engines and are a LOT cheaper to make. Bayo 1 and 2 look absolutely fantastic even by today's standards. There is no way, me thinks, they could have been funded by kickstarter because that would have cost a lot more than your typical $250 thousand-4 million.
Greetings all. New user here. I've been lurking on this site for a while ran into this thread and figured I'd post my two cents. =)
I still can't believe people don't understand what happened with Bayonetta. Nintendo isn't money hatting anything, they're funding.
People who still think Bayonetta was about money hatting need to watch this. They even tell you they're working on another Nintendo game.

Microsoft is certainly money hatting with Tomb Raider, since that game needed no funding, but Scalebound is also a different story.
I hope it's a new IP, or Nintendo is giving them a chance to work on one of theirs.

1 in every 14 Wii U owners buying Bayonetta 2 compared to 1 in every 85 PS3/360 owners buying Bayonetta 1. You're totally right. The attach rate on Wii U is way off.
