Forums - Nintendo - So i just played Splatoon for a large amount of time

I was a little skeptical about the game but i find i can't put it down. I'm getting pretty competitive with it. the lack of voice chat freaking kills me as i would love pre-game strategizing, but i love finding a way to be supportive for my team. Whether that means getting kills with a blaster to protect my ink-covering team mates, or grabbing a brush and making travel paths it's fun to have a roll to fill. I also really dig the creativity behind the sub weapons and, in some cases, the specials. The killer wail and kraken in particular are pretty entertaining. Oh yeah, did you know that you turn into a squid and swim through along floors, walls, pipes and the such? That's an immediate blast in itself. All that has been the source of the lasting appeal for me. It's taking away the time i was spending on shadow of mordor, which is kinda bitter-sweet because, so far, shadow is my 2014 game of the year (sorry smash and mario kart). I think, so far, splatoon is my multiplayer game of the year. Like it more than battlefield (and i love me some hotwire), and the destiny expansions so far. Again though, the lack of chat does kill me. You should be mastering the basics before you start innovating nintendo.

I like to dig through games and offer a critical eye to them, doing so without actually owning the games is the stuff biased fanboy posts are made of.

I find hard to waste my money in something I know I´m not interested in though.

that's why I use Tamrons credit card ;D
Dude earns crazy money.

Awesome game but I'll be pleased when there are a few more maps.

Just started to appreciate some of the depth in the game now.  Tactics have begun to evolve over the last week or so as more people get better and are experimenting with more varied load outs and finding ways to better utilise their subs, specials and abilities.

Splatoon is such a frustrating game to me. It has such a great foundation, but there are just too many issues with it right now for me to jump in for the asking price. Nintendo could have killed it by pulling a Team Fortress 2 and making it free to play. Or they could have kept it at $60 and made it a full package.

I'd jump in if:

- It didn't artificially restrict the maps you could play every four hours. Maps should be selected like in Mario Kart 8 where you vote from a pool of selected maps.

- It had Pro Controller support online. There absolutely no excuse for leaving that out.

- It had more modes. I always say this: Mario Kart is fun for the tracks. Smash is fun for the characters. A game like Splatoon should be thriving on it's modes primarily. That's what keeps people playing. A four player free-for-all multiplayer mode should have been a no brainer. A 2v2 local mode too. Maybe a local mode against a giant boss monster like what was in Metroid Blast, the Nintendo Land game. I don't even work there, and I already thought of three excellent multiplayer modes for the local multiplayer alone. The lack of modes is embarrassing. It needs at LEAST one decent local mode and 4-5 online mode. And that's the bare minimum.

- Way more maps. There should have been at LEAST a dozen maps at launch. In a perfect world, there would have been 24 minimum. It's hard to see people making blatant comparisons to Smash and Mario Kart without noticing the vast difference in arenas.

- Voice chat. There's no excuse. People should be able to play with their friends. Even if you had to pay like $.30 DLC to unlock the right to use it, there's no reason someone should have to go through a third party application like Skype to talk to their friends while playing Splatoon.

Splatoon is such a let down to me. So much dropped potential.

1:  understandable complaint.  IMO, not a big deal though

2:  there is a reason.  Not agreeing with it is your own business, but given the pace of the game not using the gamepad may actually constitute a disadvantage.  Can't be sure with that.

3.  On principle, that is understandable.  However, in practice the complaint holds little water.  Most games thrive on limited modes.  Halo:  capture the flag (and fundamentally similar modes) and slayer.  Basically two modes carry the weight of the game.  CoD:  team death match does all the heavy lifting for that game.  One mode carries that game and anyone saying otherwise is in denial :P .  Battlefield is conquest.  MOBAs (no single player) have launched with as few as one mode.  So while everyone likes numerous modes in principle, in practice it's usually one or two that carry the weight of the game and sustain the community.  So the real question is how good are the two initial modes.

4.  Understandable.  Most games do launch with around 10 or 12 in the shooter genre.

5.  Agreed, if only on principle.

But the release model also has to be considered.  Especially when talking maps and modes.  More modes and more maps and more weapons and gear are all on their way in a reasonable timeframe.  And they are free and thus must be factored into the value proposition of the initial purpose.  The delay for them also must be factored in, but not to the degree of dismissing their existence.

But I don't see what is so special about it.

If you really did play it for 7 hours then damn that's pretty darn sad considering most everyone else knew what made it unique on it's initial reveal last year.

So you didn't play game but it's too frustrating for you!? That's not logical at all.

If they make Splatoon free to play, why later dont do same with Mario Kart or SSB... If you want full package, then wait for august and buy full package at same price, or you can enjoy game write away..

-Almost everybody who bought game it will say that he have blast with it. Game is pure fun and it have surprisingly depth, tactic and play style highly dependent on each map, weapon or best combination of gear. And that's why they have rotation of available maps, it does need to have more maps for rotation in less time, but even like this is very fun.

-GamePad is very helpful in matches, you can see map at any time how your team is progressing and jump to aid them by tapping screen, using motion controls in combination with analog sticks is so much easier for controlling and aiming. In game menu, shops, lobby...you all that have on gamepad, its very simply, well organized and fast to when you go shop or lobby. So yes, it have very good excuse for leaving Controller Pro support online out.

-2 available mods for now is ok, in august 4 available mods will be more than very good.

-I agree that need more maps, but even when was 5 maps (now is 6) you could very enjoy game, and we know more maps are coming. For this type of game 10-15 is very good, we know at least 14 maps will be available.

-Voice chat need to be option for people who want that, but even leaving voice chat out dont think its big problem because game is very intense and you always knowing (because of gamepad) whats going out in match and in 3 minutes time you don't have need or time to talk with teammates about strategies or something else. So its relly not big deal if you cant talk with teammates,if you really can't play without Voice Chat (i cant see why) you can you use alternative, like Skype or something similar..

If you played game you could easily see that most of your complaints are not in place at all or they are exaggerated.

It is addictive, that is the appeal.

I love it and it is fun to see how peoaple react right away to your moves even without voice chat.

Switch!!!

I haven't played it yet. But I have watched a few gameplay videos since its release and from what I've seen it looks like a lot of fun. I'm probably going to get it by next week. But this is a game I will most likely play in short sessions. As Soundwave said, these kind of online games serve a certain purpose in a game library. I haven't got a competitive multiplayer game since Killzone 2 (at least, I haven't invested myself into one since that game), but I could see myself trying to get good at this one. Because it looks really fun and addictive, and I like the light hearted-feel of it.

It's also really nice to look at. I don't know if it's just me, but those visuals look like the best the Wii U has done so far. Sure they're cartoony, but the design and fluidity of the animation and action on screen make the game really pleasing to the eyes.

Psh. We all know the only mode that matters in Halo is Grifball.

I understand what you are saying.

I have played it for over 20 hours, dont story, some Amiibo challenges, reached lvl 20 and B+ ranking, but can confidently say I AM DONE WITH IT!
....at least until more stuff is added.

Id give it a 7/10

EDIT: OH! And ill be happy if they nerf rollers. The instant kill splash damage is lame.
