Forums - Sales - Japan sales,week 22(May 25th-May 31th)!Splatoon sold the 97,33% of its shipments,only 4K copies left on the shelves,wii u sales more than double,top hardware slightly above 3DS,MK8 hits 1m(retail)!

Pretty good sales, was off by around 2K ( Overestimated ) Wii U sales for this week but overall that's a decent boost. Also Splatoon sales are excellent, should have a 500K first week worldwide if sales in the U.S.A are better.

Congrats Splatoon. When somebody said it had over 100k preorders in Japan I though "nah". But here we are with 150k units sold.

So, thoughts.

Surprise of the week for me is Psycho Pass on XB1.  I mean, it's pretty obvious it's going to be ported to PS3/PS4/Vita in a few months, yet it actually charted fairly decently.  Good for it!

Splatoon has done very well too.  The boost to WiiU hardware is ehh, but never mind.

Cross Ange did rubbish, boo :(  Having said that, sell through was impressive, so maybe it was just shipped low and they weren't expecting much from the game.

I wonder what caused the Vita boost.  Surely not 3 niche games pandering to an audience which is already there?

I kind of felt like Splatoon would be a hit in Japan when it was announced, but I was worried Nintendo would mess it up by not advertising the game. Glad to see it is doing well. This will tell Nintendo that more new IPs can be a good thing financially.

I will reiterate what everyone else here said and say that it was a great week for Splatoon and Wii U. It seems that shooters are a bit of an emerging genre and Japan, and Nintendo's Nintendo-esque shooter was an excellent way to seize on that opportunity.

There is more sobering news however for Nintendo. Whereas many other major Wii U games have maintained reasonable legs, XCX's sales have fallen off a cliff. For a game that almost certainly cost much more than most if not all of those other games and also took longer to make, this is pretty bad news for Monolith. Naturally, we'll have to wait and see how the game is received commercially in the West, especially since the original did much better in the west. But, if it fails to do so, I can easily see Monolith being moved to make much smaller, less financially risky projects -- or worse.

If I'm not mistaken MK was selling around 4/5k a week for quite some time and now it more than doubled to 11/12k. So a lot of those 17k who bought WiiUs for Splatoon also bought Mario Kart, which means some people were waiting for Splatoon to get a WiiU along with other games such as MK.

Splatoon system seller confimed!

On a more serious tone, Mario Kart just broke 1 million after 1 year ont the market. That's great for a home console over there. Also great Withcr 3 second week sales. It desserves good sales.

You're forgetting that there's a Wii U Mario Kart 8 bundle . That's why when hardware increases the game too.

I ain't denying that, but that doesn't deny my reasoning that some people (not many) were waiting on Splatoon to come out to buy a WiiU and also got MK8. If a game is being frequently sold at a 4k/week ratio and when a new game comes out the old game sells 12k (with no other new major factors like, let's say, a price cut on MK8), I can assume that around 8k out of those 11k were waiting on Splatoon to come out to buy a WiiU and also got MK8, bundled or not.

Anyway, don't read too much into my previous comment. I was half joking. The bump the WiiU got with Splatoon is hardly what I'd call a system seller. As far as it concerns me, a system seller needs to bump a console's sales for like 10 times. :D

My 19k hardware estimation for the Wii U was pretty good.

Splatoon did great! Now let's see chart track and NPD for the full picture, I still have a feeling that it might underperform in the US and not be such a massive hit in Europe as it is in Japan.

Also; I wonder if this is the week there Famitsu will be the "better tracker"!

Nah, MC I believe is always the better tracker. Plus the shipment is 150K. Famitsu has the sales above that.

You are right, this makes no sense but there is nothing else which could have helped PS Vita hardware. So maybe it is possible that these 3 niche games helped Vita a little bit.

Very good numbers for Splatoon, also it had shipment problems. Probably very good second week too.

Vita did only 13k, this is bad (well at least Vita > PS4 and Vita > New 3DS XL)! Persona can't come soon enough.

Nice to see Minecraft legs being good and The Witcher 3 having a good 2nd week!

145k for Splatoon? This is a good opening for a Wii U game! Splatoon numbers are almost the same as what I said in the COMG thread! Hardware numbers? I predicted only 13k for Wii U, so 17.5k is good imo. Wii U beat PS4 in this week -> this won't happen again in the near future (or never again).

You said this in April. I wouldn't bet on that considering the Wii U still has many, many games that could shift hardware (any Pokemon release like Pokken Fighters, Animal Crossing, SMTxFE, Zelda, etc.)

OT: Amazing numbers for Splatoon! It more than doubled my initial prediction. And I'm glad it beat my hardware prediction also. Here's hoping that the game has really good legs and can support the Wii U throughout most of the summer.
