It's pretty simple really. PS4 has managed 50% because the competition has sold abysmally, especially the Wii U. Wii didn't manage it, despite selling incredible amounts, because both of its competitors managed to achieve strong sales.

It's a testament to the sorry state of console gaming this generation that the PS4 has managed to achieve 50% market share almost by default.

Not really.  Yes, the WiiU has sold abysmally.  The Xbox One will still have much, much higher sencond place sales than gen 5 or gen 6.

Gen 7 was an anomaly.

50% is low for a market leader.

I disagree this this.

Yep, the XBO will have second place, and will sell good. But honestly, a "much higher sencond place sales than GEN 5 or gen 6." i don't think will happen.

I don't see XBO sell more than 40,000,000/45,000,000 lifetime... i predict 35,000,000 for XBO honestly. let's see. :D

Yeah the Wii sales are obviously more impressive than the PS4 ones. That said, I get the thread on 50% because that was always a hot topic around the forms a few years ago. I remember seeing threads about every .1% increase in marketshare that the Wii got and constant talk about when it would make it to 50%. The fact that it never did was an interesting anomaly, and this made it slightly interesting to see the PS4 make it. I would be more surprised by the thread if I hadn't seen all those Wii marketshare threads. At least we didn't have a thread for every 1% increase that the PS4 got.

It will sell easily 100M+.

One time i was sure. One time i also though the PS4 was gonna to sell at PS2 level. I also hoped in PS4 > PS2 lifetime...

But the thing are change.

PS4 will sell good, very good, but is not gonna to sell 100,000,000. It will probabily sell as the PS3/XB360 level, so, around 90,000,000... all can happen of course.

But that's was i think.

PS4 is still at the beginning of it's life cycle.
Look at PS3, it released in 2006 but had it's peak year in 2011.
PS4 will be as long as PS3 in the market if you ask me. Peak year of PS4 is still couple of years away from now. PS4 could do 17-20M in that year. And PS4 still hadn't a system seller yet (Bloodborne is a fantastic game but not a system seller) and outsold already Gamecube, imagine how good PS4 could do the next years with Uncharted 4, next Gran Turismo, God of War 4 etc...

Wii had a short good life and PS4 will have a long good life. PS4 still will outsell Wii!
Deal with it!!!

Many people are still recovering after the PS4 50% share part. Its hard to swallow news. This thread proves it.

Why is hard to swallow? I have not problem with this. You not remember back in 2014 how i was happy for the PS4 sales?  I also hoped in PS4 above PS2... Any way, yes, i kinda hate the tread about "PS4 50% marketshare" but not because PS4... just because the people say Wii never hit 50% MS.

At this point, i thought, is so important? Is so important when the Wii is the fast selling console of all time? hell, is true that Wii not hit 50% of marketshare, but the competion was strong!!!

XB360 and PS3 was selling really good... and even with this, Wii outsold PS3 and XB360 combinet in 2008.

That's why this thread. Not for say that 50% of marketshare for PS4 is nothing. is very good. just for say that IMO, the Wii sales are more impressive.

tit for tat then... gotcha

Just means I'm not surprised.  Nintendo fans found it super interesting when the Wii looked like it would make it to 50%, Sony fans found it interesting when the PS4 made it to 50%.  All on a site dedicated to sales.  It's probably the most predictable thread I've seen in a while.

Isn't always a console war thing, Kowen, sometimes threads are just made because it's interesting that something happened, and the context for why it was interesting were all the threads on the Wii and that it never quite made it even with its obviously impressive sales.  Wii is the winner between the two, no question, but it's interesting to see PS4 make it to a milestone that Wii never quite could.

But that's why i don't think PS4 will sell much more than PS3.

Gen 7 was very long, will not happen again. I think PS4 will break the peak next year, in 2016, with Unchy 4 and Gran Turismo... but after that, i expect a PS5 in 2019, and lower sales for PS4.

Gen 5... 2nd place was 35m I believe.  The Xbox One will sell many millions more than that.

You also disagree that 50% is low for a market leader???

I kinda disagree with 50% of market is low. Depend, if the console are two, yes. For example, for 3DS 50% of marketshare is low, considering that the only competition is PSVita. So, a minimum of 60% of marketshare is what 3DS must hit, and with the actually 80%/85%, 3DS is a succes.

In the home console market. We have 3 console. So, 33% for all console is probabily "normal". +40% for the leader is good. +50% is not low with 3 console.

For the gen 5: Nintendo 64 sold 33,000,000 lifetime. XBO will do better, but not by much imo.

50% is 50%, while the Wii sold a lot it never captivated 50% of all of those buying consoles at the time. The Wii U could have sold 1 billion units but if the total amount of consoles sold throughout the generation was 3 billion then it still isn't that impressive as a console able to sell 50million when the total amount of consoles sold is 100 million.

Send a Friend Request On PSN :P

Wii was very strong for a few years, and cost $250 at launch. PS4 will have a stronger second half of this gen than the Wii did in the previous, thanks to having a lot more room to cut the price, and not selling because of a fad that died as quick as it began.
