Rare had an AMA for SoT and here are some of the replies that they gave.

"We’ve got big ambitions about our AI and we definitely want to have other living things in the game other than just skeletons & sharks. I know there are a number of people here who would love us to spend some time on animals for the world. I mean, Fable had chickens, right?"

"The current skeleton AI are just set as a base level so they provide somewhat of a challenge but don’t annoy players when exploring too much. As we add different quest types, progression etc, there will definitely be different challenges to take on"

"In terms of the performance of the game, updating physics objects is probably one of the most expensive things we do (the ship is one great big physics object containing lots of other little ones!). We did experiment with making the chest more realistic (and having it fall down cliffs and bounce around) but it’s a trade off between spending our precious CPU cycles on things like the chest, or allowing us to support more ships or other exciting things. We are always looking at the performance side of things, so we’ll never rule anything out though!"

"Well, the spy glass is something we’d definitely love to have in the game, as it’s such an iconic pirate thing to have!

The spy glass is actually something of a technical challenge for us as it breaks our island streaming code, which currently works by only loading in islands that you are close to. This means that we only load in high detailed textures and models when we are really close to an island – and as you are inevitably sailing towards an island, we’ve got time to load it in by the time you get there. If you can whip out a telescope and see islands that are further away, it means we need to have more of these high-resolution assets loaded, which means we use up more memory (and we currently use a lot of memory). So, it’s something we really want to do, but before we get to it we first need to make sure we’ve got our memory under control, and we give our island streaming code a bit of love and attention (which we are at the moment). So nothing to report right now, but hopefully we’ll have news soon."

"Well, we’d definitely love to add much more damage to the game. Our Unity prototype tested out different forms damage (like the mast coming down) but we haven’t had a chance to prototype those things in Unreal yet. The actual damage tends to be the easy bit, but we need to make sure that the players can repair the ship afterward that brings the challenge. We don’t want to do any permanent damage to things like cannons until we have a method of refreshing your ship without sinking it first!

Obviously, as we start looking into more sea based AI, we may well need a more complex damage model."

"Love to do", "will" and "going to". Reading their replies give you the feeling that they are on brainstorming stage.

I should have done some research before buying it. I like how the game looks and the basic idea of building a fortress and defending it, but it just isn't fun so far and feels like playing a facebook game 😐 fuck you Epic! I'm so glad The Coalition took over Gears of War.

More like be thankful Microsoft bought Gears, or else the fate of Gears would be horrible.

What fate? The franchise was over storywise. Epic is a creative company and needs to diversify its catalogue of games. This is something micorsoft doesn't really understand about being a videogames company. Whether fortnite is good or not, epic has to think about their future. Their future wasn't gears

Their future is F2P Games with no narrative and Unreal Engine 4, hardly that creative and I imagine that has a lot to do with Tencent, probably wouldn't have been long before a F2P Gears happened.

You will see their catalogue expand. Fortnite is just one game. Epic are  still one of the pillars of competitive game developement. Epic wanted to be done with Gears and its Microsoft who needed Gears. Cliffy B is working on his game and more games are out there for us to play. Microsoft has the key members of Epic working for them in house now. Thats just the way it was meant to be. In order to grow you need to diversify your work.

Erm...

  • Shadow Complex Remaster (2015) - Paid
  • Paragon (2016) - F2P, MP Focused.
  • Robo Recall (2017) - FP2, VR.
  • Fortnite (2017) - F2P, MP Focused.
  • Spyjinx (2017) - (Likely F2P) Mobile
  • Battle Breakers (TBA) - F2P Mobile
  • Unreal Tournament (TBA) - F2P, MP Focused.

It's pretty clear and has been clear ever since Tencent purchased that huge chunk in them that Epic Games is now focused on F2P MP Titles and Mobile, I say again, it wouldn't have been longer before Gears also got a F2P MP Only Game or Mobile Spam.

Also we have a quote from Rod Fergusson himself: "It was the fact that Epic was done working on Gears ... I saw on the horizon with Tencent's involvement and what was happening within the company that they were changing direction in a pretty fundamental way in terms of the free-to-play and all those sorts of things, and it's not something I was interested in. I like AAA, big-narrative, big-story, big-impact games, so that's why I immediately went to BioShock Infinite because it was like, 'OK, here's this AAA story game. Maybe I can learn some new techniques."

Old Epic is long gone.

I stand corrected. Damn. Thats not good. If its profitable then I cannot blame them. Thanks for the update. You're probably right that Gears wouldve gone F2P if they decided to make a sequel but MS needed another sequel. They wouldve kept petitioning for one. Its better off this way with Microsoft having the IP. Sucks about the F2P though.

Decent month. Shame I already own Trials Fusion though :/

Slime Rancher has really positive reviews on Steam.
Red Faction Armageddon is IMO quite a bit underrated. Sure it's more linear than Guerilla, but the gameplay is still extremely fun.
Don't think anything needs to be said about Bayonetta.

Good month IMO.
The slime game is launching on Gold the same time it comes out and it looks like an interesting shooter.
Trials is a fun game.
Bayonetta is a good game. Never finished it on Wii U so I'll give it a try.
I've heard good things about the Red Faction games.

Bought a used Xbox One Kinect for 24€.
Once it's here I will buy Kinect Sports Rivals and Dance Central Spotlight. Heard good things about Fru as well.

Any other recommendations? Doesn't have to be Kinect exclusive, but should be something that enhances the game.

Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved was a fun game to play with Kinect. There's some great tracks like Bohemian Rhapsody, Fire, 7 Nation Army etc.

A Hat in Time is coming to Xbox One & PS4 this Fall.
