Not so obvious, but Steve from Minecraft (how many people know that's his name in the first place) is probably the most popular character from last gen:

forgot about him, i dunno i think he's up there (at the very top) but characters like Nathan Drake despite nowhere near in sales is more popular... But thats arguable. Steve could take the crown

Geralt? He's been around a while now.
My submission is Kat from Gravity Rush on the Vita

Remember only from this current Generation, so Characters originating from Vita/3DS and/or WiiU/X1/PS4. A game sales =/= Most popular btw, im talking recognition!!! |
Well are you talking 1)recognition (the character that is recognized/known by the largest amount of people) or 2)popularity (the most liked character according to....the interwebs?)
in case 1 I´d say Trevor Philips from GTA V (could also be Michael or Franklin) or the Ghost from Destiny. If it has to be exclusive I´d go with Delsin due to commercials.
If it´s case 2 I´d say Knack! Why? I know, I know....appearantly everbody and their mother hates knack but if we´re honest we love that lil´ rascal...we just can´t admit it because we´re too tsundere^^

Nongamers know who Steve is. Non gamers don't know who Nathan Drake is, snd the Mii's aren't characters imo.

if it was my personal choice, i would have to pick the Inklings from Splatoon. not even out yet and that game is already generating thousands of fans, people lining up for the beta, and probably the biggest ad campaign Nintendo has ever pushed.
now if it was based on recognition....
and by widespread popularity....
as much as i hate to say it....
the animatronics from Five Nights at Freddy's
come on, at least a few of you had to see that coming
Tough call.
I'll just say Inklings from Splatoon.
"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
Geralt isn't new. He's not even a gaming character originally. He's from the books from 1993 and later a TV Show/Film and MUCH later in games and even then the first game is several years ago.
The inklings.
They should really get them names.
I propose:
Inca
Inga
Inez
Ingrid
for the girls and:
Inkata
Inrique
Inko
Inkit
for the boys.
