Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo thinking about what steps need to be taken to make NX region-free

I don't want to be pessimistic, but thinking about removing region-lock and actually doing it are two different things.

I'll believe them whenever it happens.

Please excuse my bad English.

lol, I love how they make everything sound complicated like region-free software/hardware is a technological hurdle the industry hasn't yet witnessed...

Also, region locking could be removed from the 3ds and wiiu with a firmware update, if they were genuinely considering nx being region free why would they cling to region locking on the 3ds and wiiu?

for the same reason they decided to add region locking to the 3ds and wiiu in the first place. because fuck the consumer.

Only 9 years too late really. 10-11 by the time it comes out.

Funny for Ninty to present it as it was something we was giving to the consumer, while region locking is taking something away from us !

They're making a lot of money on yen/dollar/pound/euro differences. With us witheuro getting shafted in the end as always (not taking into account aussies or brazilian...)

I always think regionalisation and translation of games was absolutely bullshit, they can do a DLC translation after the game getting gold/shipped or whatever. I always wonder how localisation fanteams manage to get faster translation than the developpers themselves. Maybe the latest don't put enough focus , but as sure they don't have the will to do it.

Should´ve done it a loooong time ago.

C´mon Iwata, put the 'dinosaur Nintendo' in the past.

i want games to be localized.

is more important than free region. Would FFV be localized if theres no region lock?

So, as soon as they keep localizing games, ok, kill that region lock.

everyone hates region locked.

"Step one, don't add region locking
Step two, done."

You forgot
Step three: Profit :)

What gave you the idea that region free means that games stop being localized? Especially a mainline FF game? That has never happened to any mainline FF game that was available on a region free console.
Games don't get localized (from Japanese to English) if the developer doesn't think it will sell well enough to warrant the translation. That's it. If they don't expect their titles to be appealing to the west, they're also not expecting the few japanese speaking westerners to support the Japanese version in any significant way.

ndeed, heavy import figures would also give the developers/publishers clear and obvious indication that a title would do well localized.

One small step that Sony/M$ has done already.
One giant leap for Nintendo.

But seriously, hopefully this means Nintendo is going to take future console seriously now and compete.
