Forums - Gaming - Can video games be TOO cinematic?

Of course games can be too cinematic. The metal gear series, as great as it can be at times, is hampered by Kojima's soap box and ever heavy hand. It's like the very concept of brevity came to life and raped Kojima's mother right in front of him when he was a boy and now he's doing everything in his power to kill it with overwrought exposition.

Yes.

Doesnt mean there isnt an audience for that though. Telltale games proves there is.

But as played games, these titles fail hard on the gameplay department.

By the way, the order isnt one of these games. Has plenty of gameplay.

Sorry if it seemed like I was trying to spread that around. It`s just something I`ve heard mentioned before. I do see what they mean though. The game does seem to have some cinematic moments in the game, such as the early intro, and well.... I don`t want to go into spoiler territory. But it`s def not a bulk of it. Just some here and there.

Not you, people who haven't played it

And yeah, the intro is the only part where it is kinda that way, but that's a intro xS

Yeah but could you imagine TLOU without that opening?  I mean...the feels.

Just finished The Order 1886, and I really enjoyed it, only paid $40 for it and I think that was about what it was worth. I didn't mind the amount of cinematics in it, as it helped to progress the storyline in ways gameplay may not have been able to. Like so many others though I wish the game was longer, and the cinematic elements could have been spaced out with longer levels between them. Done right I think cinematics add to a game, which I think The Order did, as long as they are not a large percentage of the overall time spent in the game.

They can but I don´t like them.

A game to me is too cinematic when i see the developers making decisions on that basis (trying to be more cinematic) instead of trying to make the best game possible. I've made numerous comments about how The Order's cinematic design blatantly works against the strengths of video games and holds the game back, so yes, a game can be too cinematic.

However, that isn't to say that there is a cinematic threshold per se. The actual use of the word "cinematic" is fairly loose, but I can certainly see a game being extremely cinematic without losing out (but perhaps that would require a budget out of the range of logic, who knows)...
