Yes they can be too cinematic. Imagine a game that is 99% cutscenes and 1% player input. Boom, too cinematic.

The problem is that the story was pretty standard in the Order 1886, there were no real game changer or anything like that which blows you away. There are a lot of games who havent that great gameplay too but the story or story telling makes up for it. See silent hill 2, MGS 2, the Last of Us or Shadow of Memories.
Shadow of Memories pretty much is a 3D adventure, no real gameplay but one of the best storylines today.
You know what I do when a game doesn't suit my tastes? I don't buy it. So, in that light, games are exactly tailored to my tastes.
Really tired of people thinking they are entitled to tell a developer how their vision should be realized. As I've said countless times, if you can do it better, fork up the money, start your own studio, and make your own goddamn game.

As long as the gameplay is there to support it, it's of a high enough quality, and I actually care about the story and characters, I don't think a game can be "too cinematic" to me.

That's why I hate this "interactive movie" bs that's going on, because most of the time people don't even know what they are talking. They see a game with good graphics and that equals it to cinematic game with no gameplay and like an interactive movie. TLOU is a pretty game, yes it is, it has a great story and a very strong story telling as well, but it's also a very solid game with a great gameplay. The same goes to people that see a game that lack graphical quality, as indie games, and that equals it to being not being an actual game as it doesn't count as a game... |
Woah there, I did not imply at any point that TLoU was an heavily focused interactive movie and was therefore a bad game. I only thought I recalled some people referred to that as a sort of cinematic game. I only wanted to know whether that was an example, and what other examples there would be. As for my other comment, I only refer to games in general, and not in any games in particular.

No, it wasn't cinematic enough, or rather the story wasn't that great.
The problem with these games is that often the story is designed around the set pieces, it should be the other way around. Strong story first, design the world around it.

The simple fact that some attempted to pass TLOU as a game like that were proof enough some people just talk without actually knowing. They spread what they hear/read as if it was true, and that's were the problem actually lies, a game will be pointed in some point by many simply because others wanted to try to pass it. There is still people out there that truly believe TLOU is almost a movie and not a game, gladly this one had strength enough to crush it. |
Sorry if it seemed like I was trying to spread that around. It`s just something I`ve heard mentioned before. I do see what they mean though. The game does seem to have some cinematic moments in the game, such as the early intro, and well.... I don`t want to go into spoiler territory. But it`s def not a bulk of it. Just some here and there.
