Forums - Gaming - (Update: Hatred is Out. Reviews in. Déja Vu.)Are “M” Rated Games Really Mature?

Are you satisfied with how mature themes are handled in gaming?

Yes, I am satisfied 20 25.32%

I lay somewhere between yes and no 31 39.24%

No, I am not satisfied 28 35.44%

Total:79

In this case, mature =/= deep and intellectual. It just means blood/gore/sex/swearing/all of the above.

Just a way for parents to be careful when shopping for their kids and for store employees to stop younger gamers from buying stuff out of their age group (though this isn't always the case).

Could people please get off their high horses with saying that "mature" games is really for teens or that they have the maturity level of a teenager. It's only a rating of the content itself and not a measurement of the maturity of an individual. Games with "mature" content/ mature themes are intended for teenagers and adults.

Most M rated games are quite immature though.

Metroid Prime 2 and Majora's Mask 3D are some of the darkest games I've played and yet they're only rated 12+.

These games are more mature and subtle in their presentation than the majority of the M rated games.

Maturity is subjective and I don't trust your opinion on such a thing.

"Mature" refers to the amount of blood, guts, sex, and swearing in a game rather than how emotionally mature its content is. As far as actual content goes, a good many "mature" games are rather puerile. They seem to be a 13-year-old boy's idea of "mature."

You're quoting two games whose developers have made some impressive mature titles, though.

I know.

Strictly speaking, there isn't even anything inherently wrong with being immature; Bayonetta 2 is immature as fuck and it's my game of the gen so far.

I just reject the idea that most M rated games don't cater to teens.

You're right. A lot of M rated games do cater to teens

Maturity is not being ashamed of liking the games/things you like, no matter what the target audience is supposed to be.

As a kid/teenager I was ashamed of liking DBZ because of what my friends might think. Now I don't care anymore. That is maturity.

That's why I can consider games like Super Mario 3D World mature. For starters, the level design is structured around a principle called kishōtenketsu - a four part structure of Chinese poetry (introduction, development, twist and conclusion). It's absolutely brilliant and this is not something a kid can pick up on. Something like that can only be appreciated by a mature person. Secondly, the final world can only be unlocked by collecting 3 green stars, one stamp and hit the top of the flagpole in every level. The final world is so hard that it's not designed for kids, but for seasoned gamers. I'm not saying a kid can't beat the final world, I'm saying it wasn't designed with them in mind.

So yeah, I don't care if you trust my opinion or not. The truth is, there's more thought put into an E for everyone game like Super Mario 3D World than 95% of the M rated games on the market.

I didn't say anything about their sense of humor being mature.
