The last games I played excluding Destiny and Minecraft were all mature rated. I will say that Dark Souls 2, Watch Dogs, CoD, Middle Earth: Shadows of morder, The Evil Within, and Borderlands the Pre sequel are not meant for kids. All the people I know that also play these games are well past 17 years of age including me.

More than that too. A lot of parents will cave into their kids demands and buy these games for them as well. The kids love them because they think it makes them look cool or something, or if Jimmy has one then Billy will want it too etc

That's why I can consider games like Super Mario 3D World mature. For starters, the level design is structured around a principle called kishōtenketsu - a four part structure of Chinese poetry (introduction, development, twist and conclusion). It's absolutely brilliant and this is not something a kid can pick up on. Something like that can only be appreciated by a mature person. Secondly, the final world can only be unlocked by collecting 3 green stars, one stamp and hit the top of the flagpole in every level. The final world is so hard that it's not designed for kids, but for seasoned gamers. I'm not saying a kid can't beat the final world, I'm saying it wasn't designed with them in mind.

So yeah, I don't care if you trust my opinion or not. The truth is, there's more thought put into an E for everyone game like Super Mario 3D World than 95% of the M rated games on the market.


Ah so you can be of sound reason when you want to. I never cared about what others thought of my hobbies. I play video games and watch anime. I prefer not to think of any gamer or genre of gaming as immature. It's demeaning to gamers and anime fans because it's the farthest from the truth. There are more real world issues being addressed in games/anime than in any sport where the fans actually fist fight over who won.

Are certain genres marketed towards certain demographics? Sure. Does that dictate if a game is immature or not? No. Can we move past this topic?

Yep, I agree. I just hate it when people on the internet insult me for liking "childish" games like Super Mario while they think they're so mature when playing CoD or Assasins Creed.

Or when people claim Nintendo only makes kid games. Nintendo makes games for everyone, not just kids.

Just like M rated games can be enjoyed by teens, E rated games can be enjoyed by adults.

What does that even mean...? The rating is there just to tell people that the game is not suitable for a younger audience... It has nothing to do with the "deep" story or "deep" themes... A 14 year old shouldn't be allowed to see sex or violence of that calibur even if it is mindless because they are too young for it hence why those games are rated M regardless of whether or not it has a deep theme or not... People that are over the age of 18 can play those games  because they are old enough for it and its not like they can't enjoy a game like The Last of Us while enjoying Mortal Kombat

See the thing is, there is probably a miss communication here somewhere from what you are trying to say and what we are thinking that what you are trying to say and considering how many people are thinking the same way as I do, the miss communication is on your part so you should really clear it up if there is one.

It is clear to me that you did not read the article properly since I NEVER said "deep".

I would suggest that you probably take your time to read it again and quote me properly. That will be my first suggestion for us to overcome the mis communication issue.

Considering how so many people are saying the samething as me, it is clear the the fault is yours in your OP. But if you replace "deep" with "mature themes" the argument stays the same because a teen under 17 shouldn't really be playing those types of games even if the game lacks the so called "mature themes" but still has mindless sex and violence hence the rated M rating...

I think you misunderstood the usage of the word "Mature" here.  The M rating is there to tell people that there is violence, gore and sex scenes not suitable for children. It has nothing to do with how "mature" the theme in said game is.

Here here to the OP. I wish there was more depth in M rated games. They often have the narrative depth and character development of Divergence and Twilight. I still have yet to find any realistic relationship portrayals, well thought out motivation for the protagonist, or compelling mature intrigue. But I remain hopeful... come on devs spend more money on writers. I understand that as a 40 something video game player I may not be in the majority of game consumers, but I look forward to the industry ramping up the real maturity level over time.
