This is always kind of a strange question for me.  I mean, graphical advances often directly impact game-play advances.  FPS games, for example, are highly dependent on effective 3D rendering.  That makes it impossible for me to say, "it doesn't matter," because, clearly, there are instances where it does matter.

They can be a vital ingredient to improving game-play.

That being said, I don't give a rat's ass about "ultra high," and I certainly won't go looking for a new video card just because I have to play on "medium".

That wasn't something I considered when writing this...  The visuals in a game also need to be something pleasing to the eye, or something now jarring to it. Wolfenstein 3D seems like a game that would be somewhat difficult to play as well as a bit confusing due to the graphics. Doom however is a similar to Wolfenstien, and I thought that game was impressive graphically.

I did think for awhile about games in which the graphics had a big impact on the gameplay, but I couldn't really think of any. Does the jump from 2D to 3D count..?

Everything counts.  It's all part of progression.  With some types of games, graphical advancement is simply cosmetic.  With others, it enhances the game-play itself.

One of the first FPS games I played was Daggerfall.  The game literally made me feel sick after playing a few hours.

Compare that to Skyrim.

But the game itself is virtually the same.  Same basic mechanics, same controls, same concepts across the board.  However, the improved graphics make Skyrim a much, much superior experience.  It allows the developers to do so much more with what they've got.

Graphics are very important to gaming, they just aren't as important to every individual game equally.

I enjoy discussing graphical specs, but I can play games like Doom, Starfox 64, or Crash Bandicoot all day without the dated graphics ever bothering me.

By contrast, I nearly fell asleep playing Killzone Shadowfall.

Yeah, I can see that, and I agree. I can think of a game that doesn't look so great now, but the remake makes the experience much better.

I'd like my games to look the best they can, but that doesn't stop me from playing older games, or lower budget games.

This has always been an odd question.

If we're strictly talking about graphical fidelity, then they enhance the experience or can be a part of it in some cases.

Asthetics and artistic direction, which can be directly linked to graphical fidelity, then they're part of the appeal of the game's world. Games were never just about the mechanics, otherwise you're diminishing them to mere button presses.

I don't consciously think about graphics when I decide to purchase a game. I do when I purchase Remasters/remakes or play games on emulators, but that's because I want my games to look as good as they can.

Graphics are the most important thing. I wouldn't even play a game without graphics.

I prefer it if the games I play are aesthetically pleasing (it should go without saying that this is very opinionated), but if the premise of a game is interesting, I will look past flaws in the visual department. Since I enjoyed AeternoBlade and gave it a score of 7.2/10, it should be quite obvious that graphics in and of themselves don't play that big of a role for me.

Interesting thread with some notable effort put into it. Nice pictures.

Haha, thanks. I try to put some work into my threads. Thanks for reading too : )

How about a Dungeons and Dragons game? : D

You find yourself into a room.

There are 3 chests in front of you?

The exit to the room is sealed by iron bars.

What do you do?

Haha, these are good answers. Graphics can be helpful in enhancing the overall experience of the game, depending on what it is.

I guess the graphics are pretty important if the game is, for example, a world made of yarn. The game looking the part is important, haha...
