I don't even like JRPGs in general, but Xenoblade still blew my mind.

Don't listen to the people here, the plot goes downhill towards the end. Set your expectations accordingly.

Ah, finally someone who think that too. T

And unlike many others here, i think xenoblade is a good game, but with too much defaults (gameplay, mmo-quest, inventory, story after the middle of the game, etc...) to make this one a very good game.

THIS.

Also, take a look at the skill trees and how the affinity chart works. one of the few flaws of the game is that the tutorials for those things are too cramped together and it's overwhelming. Because of that, the first time I played I ignored those things for a while. Don't do that.

That's literally my only complaint with the game so far. I truly didn't bother digesting that information because it was so rapid fire, and I wanted to move on. Plus I learn through experience anyways.

Thankfully, I think I have the hang of things now.

Did you know characters can give gifts to each other? those collectible itens you find in the fields can be selected for a character to give another. if you give an iten that the receiving character likes (like giving sour gooseberry to sharla), affinity will increase between them. it's much faster to increase character affinity this way.

I've always thought that system was flawed. While it does give you something to do with all those items, theres just too many of them. Everybody likes different things and some items even decrease affinity, so it just becomes a boring game of trial and error. I ended up looking up a guide to see which items are the best for everybody (although they often feature character spoilers so I would advise against it)...

I...had no idea about that. I have a feeling that there's a lot about this game that I still don't know.

A much faster way to raise affinity is to fight against a unique monster that causes knockdown, sleep or unconsciousness when they get attacked. Stay out of attack range with your main character, because otherwise you'll get paralyzed too. Now run back and forth between your allies and help them out of their negative status effect with a button press; each time you do this, it nets two hearts. Reviving allies also raises affinity, and your eventual death with this strategy has no penalty because you get to keep all the affinity points. Another benefit of this strategy is that it works with any character combination, so you don't have to figure out who likes which gifts. And it obviously can be repeated as often as you please without any need for preparations; unlike gift-giving which requires you to collect stuff.

I had noticed I got affinity from reviving and helping characters in battle, but I never thought of this strategy. I'll defintitely give it a try; thanks!

But you collect lots of items anyway, might as well but them to good use. A low affinity can be usefull, though. It's a good way to get better crystals to make weapon gems.

Really good game, only major complains I have with the game are:

  •  MMO like side quest with zero variety and extremely boring to do (halfway through the game I only did them if I needed to grind).
  •  Stupid and cliche moments in the story (won't go into detail because of spoilers), there are 3 parts specifically in story that truly pissed me off.

You think the plot is great? Right now, it's just a story about revenge. Just wait till the last segment of the game and you'll see what is a great plot.

It's also kind of a savior to every living thing on the Bionis story right now as well.

Too time-consuming to figure out who has to gift to whom in order to have good gains (=two hearts or more). And if someone really lacks in affinity, you'll probably run out of effective items anyway.

This is the first time I've heard that low affinity can be useful. You can get good crystals by rebuilding colony 6, because that increases the quality of the crystals in the mine below colony 6. You are pretty much guaranteed to get level V crystals, plus the mining spots are close to each other in that area and replenish about every 20-30 minutes of game time. On top of that, high affinity levels increase the chances to forge level VI gems which can only be obtained through forging. Low affinity is good for nothing.

Low affinity is great for forging. with that, you can guarantee a low forging result, so you can often end up with a high value crystal (bellow 100 value). Do that so you end with two of those and them use them together to make a gem. Chances of getting the maximun value for the gem get really high. It's how I got my top level VI gems.

As for the gifts, one could simply check a guide and only focus on the itens that a character likes.
