Looks like they are going for a more Mark Hamill route with this Joker, which is a good thing.

This is set in a universe where Batman is already established. Who is to say that the Joker has not already been in an asylum? He could have had these tattoos take place while he was incarcerated - you know, like many criminals do.

I understood the reference, I just don't get how the Joker gets the reference.
