It also had COD: Ghosts before the PS4/X1. It would have had to have been a large, noticable upgrade too. Nobody's buying a $350 platform for a very marginally better version in a handful of areas. |
People bought a $399 and $499 platform for exactly what you said. That aside, GTA woud've had a big impact on wii u sales because people that weren't interested in it would start to see it differently and upgrade to the 8th gen.
We're just guaranteed with that blockbuster XCX and star fox, but other than that, we're still expecting something else huge
| PenguinZ said: No... It will be worst than previous years. It's not that great of a line up. There's that severe lack of a huge titles to push sales. That's not to say that I'm not excited myself about some of the games releasing.. |
Definitely. This year has nothing in the same caliber as Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros except for Star Fox U(now that Zelda has been delayed). 2014 even had the likes of Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta II , Hyrule Warriors etc which filled in the gaps, 2015 seems more barren sadly.

This. Zelda is bigger than anything announced for this year. Also, SMTxFE is not 2015.

Substiute "always" with "once in a while". Zelda: Link Between Worlds also didn't do much for the 3DS. Zelda fans tend to be Nintendo fans (go figure, what a shock) ... they're going to end up buying the system either way, so it's not like there's a huge surge in sales. With *realistic* Zelda what you do get is sometimes you get the dudebros crowd who can be enticed by a "badass" (in their mind) Zelda to buy in, but core Zelda fans? Odds are they like Mario ... and about ten other Nintendo IP too. I don't really mind Zelda being delayed at all. Now maybe some folkes will actually give other games like Xenobalde or Star Fox a chance in its absence. |
I'm not even sure if "realistic" Zelda is the huge system seller people make it out to be. N64 was down YOY in 1998 despite Ocarina of Time releasing. Zelda is one of those titles people get excited about Nintendo hardware for so it's very likely that many people buy the hardware in advance of the game, similar to Mario Kart or Smash Bros or Mario platformers, u just automatically know these titles will make their way onto the hardware at some point so no reason to wait if there are a handful of titles ur already interested in.
When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.
The second half of the year releases thus far (in the US)
Yoshi's Woolly World
Mario Maker
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Star Fox
Devil's Third
Fatal Frame V
Lego Dimensions
Skylanders 5
Disney Infinity 3.0
Just Dance 2016
Guitar Hero Live
Rodea: The Sky Soldier
Black Ops 3 (rumored)
A pretty decent selection of titles for various demographics, there will also very likely be a couple games announced by Nintendo at E3, a whole bunch of indie titles and maybe a few more 3rd party announcements.
Overall a pretty decent lineup up games.

Zelda fans just make a lot of noise on the internet, the only Nintendo console that had a Zelda game as one of its top 3 selling Nintendo games was the N64 with Ocarina of Time. That's it. EDIT: I just double checked this, and it turns out GoldenEye sold more on the N64, so Zelda: OoT isn't even one of the top 3 selling N64 games. Besides that IMO the term "system seller" gets thrown around way too much. There's very, very few games that actually move hardware en masse on their own. Wii Sports is one, Halo (OG XBox) would be another. Super Mario 64 was certainly another. Pokemon on Game Boy, yes. Final Fantasy VII on Playstation 1. GTA3 on PS2. Call of Duty on XBox 360, yup. The Wii U is going to sell 17-20 million ... somewhere in that range. It doesn't matter if Zelda releases tomorrow, a year from now, two years from now ... it's basically locked in to finish in that range. Something like Splatoon becoming the next Minecraft or Pokemon craze is the only type of thing that would change that. |
Until recently I my thoughts were Wii U lifetime (up to the release of the next Nintendo home/replacement console) would sell in the range you mentioned- 17-20 million- now between the Zelda delay and the fact Iwata is openly talking about the next console by name (codename) I think it will end up in the 14-17 million range - If they released Zelda this holiday, then the Wii U would have rcvd a nie holday Zelda bump- but if they hold it for too long, particulary til the next console launches then those buyers will just buy the next console and forgo the Wii U altogether
Yes, but only if there's a price cut. The games alone won't do it.

Ya I'm thinking right around 15 million lifetime for Wii U
