Well, it's kinda like how people are with sports teams. People like to root for their favorite team while wishing the other teams fail or at the very least doesn't beat their favorite team. It's really not that difficult to understand. Some people just make it more personal than others.

In all honesty, I kinda like the console war. I like rooting for my team and I like that gamers are so passionate about it. Should I like or buy another console when I have little to no interest in their game library? Should I buy all 3 just so I can say that I'm not biased or picking a side? I don't expect anyone else to do it.

In spite of what some (nintendo) might think, sony and microsoft's consoles have differences between eachother. Their game libraries are different from eachother. MS has more shooters and caters to americans' taste the most. Sony has more JPRG's and tries to have games for everybody.

Their company policies are also different and both are trying to make their respective console the "go to" machine for entertainment in different ways.

I hate the ps4. It is a rectangular parallelepiped confusing object.

As a flawed human, I hate what I don't understand.

HOW DARE YOU LIKE WHAT I DON'T LIKE

Its because it seems to be the social thing to do.
Both are very mainstream consoles so everybody knows about them.

Its like people arguing over Apple and Android devices. Or Windows and Mac. To me they are all essentially the same thing but people just want to justify their choices.

Simply I like Sony's IP's and there console (it's elegant and has a lovely controller). I am not a big halo or gears fan a bit to Murica for me even though Uncharted is very American to but differently.

But if the Xone would be on sale with a must own game which isn't racing (Steering wheel only support PS4 and PC) I might get one.

This is also a sales site and competition includes picking sides although I doubt anyone of you wouldn't be happy with a free console which isn't made by their favourite manufacturer. Perhaps a few ninty fanboys since they hate anything which either Sony or MS did to gaming.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Wouldn't the fact that they're "similar" actually "justify" the war? It's like two entities fighting to cover the same ground, and fans are the little soldiers.
Meanwhile Wii U's taking the shoreline erosion and going "oh sh-"
Vita is at the bottom of the ocean screaming bloody revenge with its last breath
3DS has lost count of how many graves it has risen from and forgets its big brother even exists

Why excluding Wii U?

Short answer: People like to associate themselves with winning products. If a product they feel is the best, is selling the best, then they literally feel better as a person. Xbox and Playstation are each the others main obstacle to total domination. Therefore each fanbase feels threatened by the other.

This stems from a form of escapism and the need to belong. These are roots of real world issues that only time and maturity can heal.

-------------------------------------------------------------
In the 7th gen and in my younger years, I slept like a baby knowing PS3 was last place. No matter what PS3 exclusive came out, no matter how much it sold well over 360 for a period of time, I had a aura of happiness because at the end of they day, lifetime 360 sales were higher.

I felt inherently superior to them as a human being, no matter how cocky they were or proud of a recent PS3 achievement.

Now that I am in my late twenties and on the verge of taking the next step in my life (getting engaged, moving into my house Ive been renting out for the past 3 years), I can say I am largely over it.

Yes I am still a Xbox fanboy. Yes it kinda bums me out dem Europeans and Japanese just can't seem to take to the Xbox brand. But Xbox One isn't doing bad on its own merits, and its a wonderful time to be a Halo fan, especially since I invest in the extended universe as well. I largely don't care anymore that PS4 is winning, but I still take issue with the ratio in which it is winning.

Hope that answers your question.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I loved the Xbox 360 (until they stopped releasing exclusives like Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean) and still love the PS3 because of all of the support it still gets. I'm eagerly awaiting Tales of Zesteria.

The Xbox One is an insane disappointment in my opinion compared to the Xbox 360. It just doesn't have a large enough variety of exclusives and the ones it does have are mostly on PC (I'm a PC gamer) or suck. It also has one of the worst names for a console I have ever heard. People have even told me that Sunset Overdrive, which looks like the best exclusive on the platform, isn't that great (I'd probably still enjoy it).

The PS4 is better than the PS3 in my opinion and kind of feels like a return to the PS2 era with games like Bloodborne, The Last of Us, Samurai Warriors 4, Dragon Quest Heroes, Infamous, Persona 5, J-Stars Victory VS+, Final Fantasy Dissidia, The Tales of series, the Level 5 JRPG that I hope is Rogue Galaxy 2, etc.. There's also all of the multi-plat consle games that I wouldn't be able to get via PC like the 3 games that Cyberconnect2 are releasing and the game the Square Enix is goning to announce soon (hopefully Star Ocean 5). E3 hasn't even come yet and there's still games that haven't been announced.

I'd say the Wii U is the second best if you like those types of games (only Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles X interest me), but as a PC gamer the Xbox just doesn't have enough to give outside of shooters whether they be 3rd or 1st person. I'll just wait for Microsoft to integrate PC and Xbox with Windows 10 and hopefully Sunset Overdrive and Crackdown come out on PC.
