if the wii competed with ps2 and the wiiu competed with ps3 and 360 then probably it would have done well but still it wouldn't have been that big

wii was just a hit because ps3 was priced too high and sony delayed it.

The Wii exists only because of the GameCube...

But the main subject here is probably if the Wii U would have sold better in this alternate reality. The answer is no, because it would still be the same radical departure from a successful console that it is in our reality.

This is basically it. The Wii is a Super GameCube with motion controlls. It the GC didn't exist, the Wii would have been based on the N64, and that would have really limited the console in a time when you needed to fight the PS2 and its monster sales (also the Wii can't play non-videogame DVDs, so it would have looked bad during the DVD craze).

You know it deserves the GOTY.

If the Wii launched in 2001 it wouldn't have succeeded. Motion sensing tech was not as advanced back then to carry it to the heights it reached during the 7th gen. It also wouldn't have had WiFi, Bluetooth or 512MB of internal storage since such tech would've been to costly for Nintendo to consider, the same reason DVD playback was discarded. It would've been just what the GameCube turned out to be

Wii was just just a hit because of the ps3 price tag, really you're being serious?

Wii was a hit because it offered something completely new and innovative which could be enjoyed by entire families. It was a hit because of motions controls and Wi Sports. Not because they couldn't afford a ps3. Besides Xbox 360 was already on the market for some but that didn't stop people from getting a Wii either. You've got to remember most people didn't yet have a HDTV anyway, that factor became relevent only later.

Sure the high price of ps3 might have helped a little bit but you're selling the Wii short here. Everyone wanted a Wii when it was released, regardless of what was going on with ps3.

if you were following gaming last decade, you would know how big the Playstation brand was after PS2.there is no way Playstation went from 1st with 70% marketshare with PS2 to 2nd place with PS3 and just bombing initially with PS3.

Wii was big but it wouldn't have reached the same place if PS3 was $299 or $399 by any chance

Wii would have reached 50million to 80million range but nowhere near the 100 million it reached because it was the cheapest console

Of course I know how big the Playstation brand was. I'll admit that Wii would have sold less if PS3 was handled better, but no way it would have sold only 50 million. Price matters sure, but only to a certain amount. Gamecube was dirt cheap but still sold like crap. (Also, no way PS3 could have been sold for 299 unless it would've been a completely different console). No way all those Wii owners would start buying Playstations instead (yes, of course some people would have). There was just too much buzz and hype around the Wii. I remember people offering to trade their PS3 for a Wii, all kinds of contests to win a Wii. It was sold out everywhere for a very long time and pretty hard to abtain.

But still, lets assume PS3 had a better launch and Wii only sold 80 million. It still would have been a hit, considering it would have been Nintendo's highest selling console and be a massive leap forward from Gamecube sales.

wii would have sold between 50-80million,no more no less

Gaming would have missed Nintendo's greatest console. Not having Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, F-Zero, Luigis Mansion, Paper Mario etc. The Wii wouldn't have been the big thing it was considering it would've been up against the PS2.

Generally people would've given up on Nintendo 1 gen earlier.

What if Nintendo Skipped the Gamecube?  What if the Wii was their sixth generation console, the Wii U was their seventh generation console, and something else was their eigth generation console?  Would the Wii still have sold 100M?  Would the Wii U have done much better than it currently is?  And then what about their eigth generation console?

It couldn't exist. Motion controls would be very bad and dumb in 2001. And expensive. It's why face tracking wasn't in the 3DS in the first place.
