Forums - Nintendo - Retro Studios should be Nintendo's Naughty Dog: Journey to the West

So you want Nintendo to waste a lot of money on games that aren't going to make PS/X players jump ship anyway?

No, because it wouldn't be a waste, and there are gamers who would gleefully "jump ship." Sony lost 70m gamers in the jump to the PS3. There's no telling how much Microsoft lost in the jump to the XBO. If there are games they want to play, they will happily "jump ship," like they always have.

Why? If Nintendo really though that would be a good idea, then they would just buy a developer to do that...

...Do you even know how Retro came to be?

Yes, they were bought by Nintendo after Metroid Prime.

I disagree with calling them overrated but I will say that Retro is wasting their time with Donkey Kong. They should be making an Uncharted caliber Metroid games.

Returns sold like over 5 million on the Wii, don't even know how much on the 3ds, and tropical freeze is around 1mil right now. While I'd prefer them to make a new ip, they certainly did not waste their time on donkey Kong.

Nintendo is losing because they're playing by their own rules. I'm not saying that Retro should make an Uncharted clone, but Nintendo needs to have the same epiphone they had with smart phones. Their games are not selling their hardware. It's not enough. Frankly, they could maky ten AAA Nintendo games a month, and it would never be enough, because mainstream gamers don't want just those games. Until Nintendo "plays me too" and starts getting on the ball with the west, they will keep under performing.

I'm not saying this to be mean, but it literally doesn't matter what your preferance is. Nintendo only catering to you is literally killing their console business. Nintendo needs to do more than that, and Retro is by far the best studio they have that is equiped to do it. Somewhere down the line, Nintendo has to start playing ball with the rest of the industry. They don't have the foundation to only do what they want anymore. They have to start doing what everyone wants, too.

Splatoon is proof that they realizing that. So is XCX. So is Nintendo going mobile. All examples of Nintendo incrementally moving forward. Nintendo putting a stake in the west is arguably the most important.

I BOW TO YOU MR KHAN YOU'RE MY LORD!That's the sheer truth that spemanig don't want to understand...I can't say more as I'm too drowsy!

Haha no problem, I just edited that last post, what do u think of my idea on the first page?

While I think that's a good idea, I think that it's something that will take time. Nintendo definitely does need a place for sport and racing sims, but those feel secondary to the types of games people buy consoles for. I think that it's important for Nintendo to have those types of games without needing to depend on EA, 2K, or Konami, but I think that Nintendo right now and get people buying the NX first with blockbuster games.

That being said, I do think that Nintendo gains something from having your trifecta. Especially if they can do something to differenciate themselves from those other games. The biggest issue comes from licensing. There's no point in either if Nintendo can't get official player rosters or a good variety of cars. Problems like with Madden are glaring.

Differentiating themselves is a key point in my idea, I don't think they should go out and try making Madden/FIFA/NBA 2K killers because honestly that plan is simply going to fail. Instead make sports games that are a nice alternative to those types of experiences that can still appeal to fans of said games. Take something like Punch Out or Ready to Rumble Boxing, they aren't as casual/simplistic as Wii Boxing but they also don't take themselves as seriously or try to be as realistic as EA Fight Night, they are kinda in the middle.

I know Nintendo has their line of Mario Sports titles but I feel like they are limiting their audience with those games by including Mario, instead they should make games that are a middle ground between Mario Sports & EA Sports in terms of both gameplay and visuals. They aren't likely to sell on par with Madden/FIFA/NBA 2K but can they sell about 2 million per sports title? Ya, that should be possible assuming the install base is large enough.

Same goes for the other genres, Nintendo can't just make a Call of Duty killer and expect 20+ million sales, instead Retro could make a FPS that feels/looks unique sorta like Borderlands or Bioshock, such a game could be a success and sell 3+ million.

Just some ideas on how Nintendo can diversify their portfolio a bit for western audiences.

They should be making their own games. Making another Metroid is just as much a "waste of time." That's the point of the thread.

I wouldn't say that. Metroid has always had makings of something that could he a huge system seller. That possibility only truly came to fruition with the Western AAA game shift we saw last gen with emphasis on maturity, FPS, Sci-fi etc, but Metroid has never been in a position to take advantage of that because of platform. The same way COD and Golden Eye fell flat on the wii, Metroid was never going to truly come into its own on a sub HD, dated system with such a family orientated image.

A Metroid Origin game, with slightly more dynamic action but the same focus on mood and exploration could do really well and entice a lot of the same people who look towards games like Fallout, MassEffect, Bioshock etc

Metroid Prime 1 (GC): 2.81
Call of Duty 2 (PS2): 2.89

Take into account the vast difference in userbase and I think you get why I'm making the comparison. Not saying Metroid can become COD lol, but it could be a lot bigger then what is if its reintroduced on a new platform, the same way COD: Modernware reintroduced COD.

I think Retro should expand and tackle new mature IP, but they should definitely also tackle Metroid on a new platform.

I think that 7th gen pretty much proved that there are quite a lot of people that are more than willing to jump ship and have no brand loyalty...I'd say that maybe even majority of gamers have no loyalty, and will go for best offering, whatever that personally means for them.

True, but the issue is that if Nintendo wants this slice of gamers, they're not only going to have to do it, they're going to have to do it better. One studio making one game every 2-3 years is not going to pull them away.

Besides, the way spemanig describes all of this is pretty foreign to Nintendo's software strategy anyway. We rarely see them make games just to "appeal to a market." They have plenty of games that end up that way, but it's not what drives them to tell studios what to do.

Oh, I agree, they need at least 2-3 new high budget western IPs to have any chance at that game...similar to what MS did with Halo, GoW and, arguably, Fable.

But, yeah, I'd be surprised if they actually do any of that, they seem to be too entrenched in their own ways.
