Forums - Gaming - WiiU vs Dreamcast

i never really noticed this until today, but thought it was interesting.

SEGA released the dreamcast in in Japan in 1998.  A year later SEGA brought it to america in September of 1999.  SEGA ended Dreamcast in 2001

The Dreamcast went on to sell 10.6m consoles, though VGC has it recorded as 8.2m.

The WiiU released in November of 2012.  WiiU has went on to selling 9.3m according to VGC

These two consoles are selling at a very similar pace.  Luckily Nintendo is a better business than SEGA so it wont sink them.  And now that Nintendo is going mobile and planning their next console i think they will do what SEGA couldnt and climb out of the hole theyre in.

Anyways, just thought it was interesting how similar the two were doing.  Granted i think the Dreamcast was amazing and deserved way better numbers than it got

It's a shame DC was selling at the pace of WiiU really, its library was so much better than Wii U, that console got such diverse games. Sega went all out supporting that console. They produced a classic in nearly every genre in just 2 years.

Granted Wii U too deserves better sales, but DC should've been selling a 100 million.

DC could have survived but the arcades collapsed during this time and so did sega as well as snk. Nintendo has still handhelds

I wonder if Sega could have climbed out of the hole had PC/Mobile gaming been as popular back then as they are today. Granted mobile gaming was pretty much non existent back then but it's just something interesting to think about. With all of todays technology these publishers don't really live or die by how well their home console market does.

Well, i think that is even interesting a comparation N64 VS XBO.

Globally shipment

N64: 15,200,000

XBO: 11,500,000

US sales

N64: 6,900,000

XBO: 6,600,000

Even in this case both console are close, especially in the US, maybe less Worldwide.

But how would that have really changed things? IMO Sega are one of the best PC gaming publishers around and are better than ever before. If they had went PC or mobile back when the Dreamcast was around how would that have changed anything? It wouldn't have made the Dreamcast suddenly sell better or anything would it?

I meant that it could have helped keep Sega relevent through out the years, which honestly I can't say that they are right now. They still release a good game every now and then but they are more often ignored or made fun of these days.

To me the DC was sweet because it was basically the arcade in your home. The only issue was that meant you had 1 million and 1 fighters. That gets old quickly and it really wasn't as diverse as it seemed. But Rush 2049 (I had on my N64) on DC was fantastic. That game is soooo underrated and people missed out on that gem.

Dreamcast died too fast...

I didn't realise the Dreamcast arrived that early, right in the middle of the N64/PS1s prime.

Totally agree here. Dreamcast didn't have many 'classics'. Sonic Adventure looked at now is certainly no Super Mario 64(a true classic). They had no first-person shooter close to Goldeneye/Halo. Their attempt at a racing sim fell short of Gran Turismo. Shenmue received mixed reception at the time. I would take a Wii U over a DC any day of the week.
