Forums - Gaming - Open-World games are taking over the industry, but do you like this trend?

i'm not going to say open world is bad but i prefer linear. i like an occasional open game but i find their experience is very deluted and quickly boring compared to a linear game where there is a higher degree of control on gameplay experiences and pacing.

but open world has its place. obviously loads of people love them so they should be made. i just hate it when a game starts in one place and changes. i loved batman AA but the change to open world killed batman AC for me. hated it and i have no hype for the next batman.

No, it's the worst. See Shadow of Mordor, aka the "terrible modern game".

I thought people liked Shadow of Mordor?

Open world, FPS, TPS, action adventure, platformer, RPG, Beat em up, Cinematic. It doesn't matter these days because people spend more time hating games than they do actually playing them, and dare I say it enjoying them.

Yeah I really tend to hate that trend, so I am at the none bashing camp again praising and enjoying what a game does right is more important. Take bayonetta 2 story was awful and boring but who cares slaughtering angels and demons is awesome.

Recently Driveclub the game had a rocky start but weather is awesome the game looks gorgeous and plays like a dream especially the sound and sense of speed let it come alive.

Instead of whining for a demo or complaining people online can't drive, the Ai can't drive there are to few cars and god knows what else people complain and hate about it. I freaking love playing it such fun with a wheel.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I like open world games, so long as devs put interesting and fun things to do in the world. Too often open world seems to translate to "collect 1000 widgets, take over some enemy territories, and generally waste a lot of time traversing largely empty space."

If its between open worlds and FPS, then i sure hope you are right as i'm not an FPS person.

With that said, i would like to still see semi-linar games. In particular JRPG's. I dont think they need to be open world, but i do think they should allow roaming, much lie the ps1 jrpg's of wich the FF's are the most widely known.

I just want a new Grandia and Suikoden. :(

I prefer semi-linear games or games that focus on density rather than mass; like Chrono Cross. Everywhere you went and every little detail in the game you saw almost never repeated. That and the art design was sublime.

I suppose the open world trend is a step up from the FPS craze though.

I...don't think I've played a single open world game this gen. I mean, that's going to change this year, but yeah. I don't particularly care. Open world is great when it's done well. If it's not, then I'll just ignore it.

You'll have to rethink what Open World means then.

I don't really care for the open world games as much as I used to. After a few GTAs and a few others it kinda gets to be the same old same old. Maybe I'm experiencing genre fatigue, but just because a game is huge doesn't mean its good. Hopefully developers make what they want without thinking a game has to be open world.

Fuck me. How could I forget my favorite game of all time? I guess I was just thinking of games exclusive to this gen. The shame is real though.

I don't mind it being a big thing if the games done with open worlds are done well. We'll still have a lot of other games that aren't open world. Plus, this competition will force some of these linear games to do some interesting experimenting as well, perhaps with branching level design that can lead to unique story progression to provide more replay value and more open level design within campaign sections, perhaps even trying to tie all the levels together physically into one flowing playable area you move through in the story. Just throwing stuff out there, but the short of it is that FPS games having competition should only help things.

Open world is fine... you get to do whatever you want in a giant area of space.
