Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, as long as the game has something more interesting going on for it I don't see why should it be a problem. "Sandbox" games suck, though.

I'm now filled with determination.

Dont like open world game

I find myself far more engrossed in open world games than linear ones now. The more open world games the better, just have to fill them with interesting content and characters, like Sunset and Sleeping Dogs for example. Shadow of Mordor too was amazing.

I...don't think I've played a single open world game this gen. I mean, that's going to change this year, but yeah. I don't particularly care. Open world is great when it's done well. If it's not, then I'll just ignore it.

I don't mind linear or open world, but I do prefer a more linear style than open world because too many open world games don't have the mission quality that are available in linear games.

JRPGs are open world but they have more direction to them, usually being unable to traverse certain territory making it easy to identify your next location, while your dungeons will be linear but allow for exploration. Good missions on action games that are open world usually force the player to go through uniquely designed areas that is either linear or less open.

as long as the game is good i dont care if its open world or linear.

If there's a lot of content in that open world, then sure.

I would like this generation expand many genres into open-world, at last:
FIFA - could have big portions of the game as open world, letting you play as a fan, a manager, a player etc.
Mario platforming - let us enjoy the whole Isle Delfino and run around exploring.
Metroid - No man's sky style
Racers - let us leave the cars sometimes for swap-meets, meeting the guys down at the garage, etc
Puzzle games - Jonathan Blow shows how to do it
Pokémon - should have been open world from the beginning.
Sim City - building my city and the living in it.
Civ - conquer the world in "real life"

They are too expensive to make especially on these 8th gen consoles where worlds have to be so huge. If every studio starts making them then we'll see even more studios go out of business this gen.

No, it's the worst. See Shadow of Mordor, aka the "terrible modern game".

I thought people liked Shadow of Mordor?

Open world, FPS, TPS, action adventure, platformer, RPG, Beat em up, Cinematic. It doesn't matter these days because people spend more time hating games than they do actually playing them, and dare I say it enjoying them.
