Forums - Sony Discussion - Can the PS4 really outsell the PS2?

Tagged games:

I really doubt it. The market for console gaming had peaked. Apple can sell more phones in a quarter now than even the best selling consoles sold in several years. Plus people don't keep their phones fire anywhere as long as most consoles live. People are more willing for faster turn over of their electronics and are less willing to spend 60 on single games and go more for the games for nearly nothing or full of ads.

Plus phones and tablets are easier to sell to people who don't even have a tv so while there might be done expansion in the developing markets. More of then would be using phones and tablets that can cover entertainment as well as many important functions instead of a tv and console that would mostly serve as entertainment with few to no important other functions

Not even the Wii sold more than the PS2, so no.

And ? whats that mean exactly, wii was a fad driven product.  It not out selling the PS2 was logical, fads never last long enough and the wii really did last long as they coulndt produce enough of them to satisy the craze in its first year.  They would have sold +++50 million in a year easy if they could have produced that many but it only would have exchausted the hype that much faster.

If a fad, in your words,  couldn't even sell more than the PS2, why would a PS4. It would be no different from me calling the PS4 a fad as well.

Plus PS2 had a LOCK on AAA third parties back then. If you didn't own a PS2, you were missing out on almost every huge third party game that released back then.

Also, the console was a lot cheaper. People always try to use the tired inflation argument but the fact is, sticker shock is real. $199.99 in 2015 looks like $199.99 in 2002. We see the price, and we don't think about inflation. The PS2 had a more attractive price point.

PS4 already proved its price point is atractive by selling +20,000,000.   And NO 199 now is not what 199 was even if you wish it ws to support your opinion.  These days 199 is what a nice sweater or shoes costs.

Market perception. People see the same price no matter what. This isn't 40 years we're talking about where a loaf of bread was 25 cents. This is less than a decade ago. $199.99 is a more attractive price for a gaming console. The reason the PS4 has sold so well is because the market has grown exponentially.

Can it? sure why not. Will it? no.

120 Million absolute tops imo.

The only way it can happen is if Bill Gates and Steve Balmer buy 25 million units each.
