Never liked CryEngine that much. Tried learning it, but ultimately, it was too obtuse for my taste.

"When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter."

So it isn't free. But still good for devs.

It's free if you've got a game that doesn't do very well...

It's free as long as you don't have anything to take.

Eh? Cryengine  is free for noncommerical use to. I'm sure the majority of larger 3rd party engines are...

Dunno how it is for really large devs but previously it was a monthly subscription as well as the 5% royalty, so if it was the same for them then it is still better now.

Edit: This may also imply that Unreal Engine 5 is coming soon as well, so blockbuster games may not be using 4 much longer anyways...

I always assumed that was the way it was for smaller devs. I am sure larger devs come up with a different arrangement. EA (I know EA wont use Unreal just making an example) would not pay 5% for the use of an engine, no AAA dev would I would not think. (Except Epic lol)

But like EA you'd assume most of the largest devs have their own engines anyways. I mean, why bother making your own if you can use another one without royalties (making it really cheap for AAA games).

5% can be a lot if your games make 3 billion, and actually if you are allready making the game you could allready put some extra time and afford to make your own engine all along

Does this mean that there's no reason for a hat in time to not come to the wiiu?

There is no reason for it not to be ported over to Wii U. But I doubt it is going to happen. Most of the major 3rd party engines have this noncommercial exclusion. It hardly means anything

Brilliant! You're the best Timmy!

cryengine is still the best < 3

that 5% royalty is awful though, doesnt steam have 30% royalty too? Not much left for devs themselves

This is "free" for commercial use.

5% is a shitload of money for a mega blockbuster selling game. Heck even a merely decently selling game will get Epic a nice $5 million. I wonder what a pay up front licence with no back end would cost?

Really good for the amateurs and indie folk.
