This is good, I do not want Unreal to not be seen in AAA games anymore. Its cheapness is great for lower AAA/AA games

"When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter."
So it isn't free. But still good for devs.
This is great news but does it mean epic were struggling to get enough contracts before?
Eh, this is pretty common practice. This will draw a whole bunch of students to use the platform. This will cause the students to learn th intricacies of the engine making it more likely they will use it in the future. Where Epic will make the real money. Epic did the same for Unreal 1-3
Microsoft does the same thing. I can grab any number of free Microsoft programs off my schools website

It is cheaper for a major developer to use another engine or create their own than to pay epic 5%. Unity would come up way cheaper than Unreal for AAA devs. |
Which AAA games are based on Unity?
The Unity engine gets better and better (Dreamfall Chapters, République and some others look quite nice), but it is still a long way to play with the big boys (Unreal Engine, Cry Eingine, Frostbyte...).

That is true, I was just making an example. Unity has made some gorgeous games but it is not on par with Unreal yet
