I always assumed that was the way it was for smaller devs. I am sure larger devs come up with a different arrangement. EA (I know EA wont use Unreal just making an example) would not pay 5% for the use of an engine, no AAA dev would I would not think. (Except Epic lol)

But like EA you'd assume most of the largest devs have their own engines anyways. I mean, why bother making your own if you can use another one without royalties (making it really cheap for AAA games).

5% can be a lot if your games make 3 billion, and actually if you are allready making the game you could allready put some extra time and afford to make your own engine all along
