Back to the OP's argument. The U.S. is a notoriously mercenary market, with no consistent brand preference. We chose the NES over the Master System. The SNES and Genesis jockeyed back and forth for several years, with the Genesis winning in yearly sales in 1991, 1993, and 1994 and the SNES winning 1992, and 1995-98. Americans largely ignored the PS1 at first, with the system selling roughly at Wii U levels until its first price cut, after which it improved to around GameCube levels. The N64 was actually outselling the PS1 in monthly sales for almost a year, but when FFVII came out the PS1 rebounded in a huge way and the system eventually dominated the U.S. market. The PS2 utterly dominated everything that stood in its path in the sixth generation, and it even outsold the 360 in 2006. The Wii was the top system from 2007 through 2010, while the 360 was the top system from 2011-13; the 360 even recently just edged out the Wii to become the #1 seventh-gen system in the U.S. Now we see the PS4 winning in LTD sales as well as winning every month except for Dec. '13 and this past Nov. & Dec.

Long point short, American gamers just want whatever gives them the biggest bang for their buck. Even at parity more Americans saw the PS4 as the overall better deal, as evidenced by NPD data from June through October of last year. The XBO did win this past holiday by undercutting the PS4 in price by $50, but if rankings from Amazon and other online retail sites are any indication, even with a lower price the XBO may not win outside the holidays (we'll find out for sure in two days when NPD results come in).

Sure, the PS4 may have a lead of "only" 522k in the U.S. as of the end of 2014, but the only way the XBO can win is if it consistently outsells the PS4 every month. It has to do this not only to close the gap and gain the lead, but also to maintain the lead. The PS4 won the first ten months of 2014 and expanded its lead every month. If it continues to do this in 2015 even at a higher price, then that's a sure sign that the XBO will never win. The XBO cannot win in LTD sales if it can only win in November and December. It's also worth pointing out that Sony hasn't even issued the first price cut for the PS4 yet and given historical precedent will almost certainly do so some time this year. The XBO absolutely cannot win at parity, and it may have trouble doing so even at a lower price. If the PS4 drops to $350, it would force MS to drop the XBO to $300 during the holidays to have a chance to win just then. If the PS4 drops to $300, then that may be all she wrote for the XBO's chances in the U.S. I doubt MS will drop the XBO to $250 this year. They may drop it to $300 permanently this holiday just to maintain parity, but $250 may cause incurred losses to be higher than they're willing to take just to win for two months out of the year.

The only surefire way for the XBO to win in the U.S. is to undercut the PS4 in price by $100, and I don't think MS will do that. I already have my doubts about the continued existence of the Xbox brand, and if the XBO loses too much money then MS may have no choice but to "pull a Sega" and go third-party. These are precarious times for the Xbox brand, and winning in a single market (because continental Europe and especially Japan are lost causes) probably isn't worth losing considerable sums of money on. It'd be better for the XBO to sell 40 million lifetime and make a little bit of money than to sell 50 million and be a huge money sink.

Bravo, good sir. That was absolutely beautiful.

Is that why the 360 caught the Wii in the US?

Third-party games, man. The 360 had them, the Wii didn't. And I mean "real" AAA third-party games. GTA, COD, Battlefield, Elder Scrolls, Red Dead, Batman: Arkham, Final Fantasy, Assassin's Creed, Fallout, BioShock, Resident Evil, Mass Effect, Borderlands, Dragon Age, Saint's Row, Far Cry, Mirror's Edge, Rainbow Six, Mortal Kombat, Portal, Street Fighter, Dead Rising, Crysis, Soul Calibur, and so on and so on and so on. Except for a few half-assed COD ports, the Wii didn't get any of these games. Its third-party offerings consisted almost entirely of party games and shovelware, leaving the system to subsist primarily on Nintendo's own first-party output, which dried up rapidly after the system's peak years. Its last major game was 2011's Skyward Sword. Strong long-term software support is key for good long-term hardware sales. That's why the NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, 360, & PS3 all had much stronger legs than the N64, GC, and Wii.

That's kind of my point though; there is historical data and there are trends we can analyze but there are no given rules set in stone when it comes to console sales, which is why I'm so opposed to statements like Mattrick's. It was the same with the "Wii is tracking above the PS2, it is guaranteed to outsell it lifetime!" or the "Anyone can see based on the trends that the Wii will easily get to 50% marketshare.", "But the market leader always has great 3rd party support!", "Why on earth would Nintendo release their 8th gen console first when they're selling like hotcakes?", "Smart devices will not impact handhelds.", "The PS3 will come back and win the 7th generation.", "The Wii U will have a great comeback."

Etc etc etc; it's almost as if people have learned nothing. The same thing is happening with the PS4; people are seeing the sales pace it set in its first full CY, they see that it is above the PS2, hence the PS4 must outsell the PS2, taking measure of nothing but one year worth of data in the analysis on the fly and nothing else of any depth or value.

I understand why the 360 caught the Wii in the US, I also understand why it went on and gave the PS3 a proper challenge globally.

Fortunately; you appear to be one of the users who have learned a great deal, which is refreshing.

Kinda mixed feelings about this. I don't see it happening, but I feel if it doesn't happen MS may drop out of the console race altogether. I like my X1, but I favor my PS4. Competition is good for the industry and I dont want any of the big 3 to drop out.

That said, I would take that bet under the condition that it doesn't win by default due to Sony finacial issues (something I don't see happening, but is in the realm of possibilities).  However someone else already claimed it so I guess I am safe!  =P

If it ain't world wide it don't matter.

Definitely not now anyways. US used to be a much more relevant market, but Gaming has grown so much throughout the world. Some people still like to think NA is theonly market for gaming though...

XBO will overtake the PS4 , but the PS4 will take back the lead at the end of this gen...

I really don't understand why people think Xbox one will overtake PS4 in the US with no real advantage like the Xbox 360 had.

  1. No One Year Head Start
  2. No RROD Rebuyers
  3. No Third party timed exclusives ips that were known by PS2,GC and Xbox players on Xbox 360 first because by being the first and only Next-Gen Console on the Market for a year (edited)
  4. No real price advantage
  5. No Xbox live advantage
  6. Not as much media bias against the PS4 like there was for PS3
  7. (edited in) No superior third party ports

I am with you. Though for me going from having the superior third party ports to the inferior ports should be added and second on the list.  Granted that's a combination of being easier to develop for (which was a xbox advantage) and the PS4 superior hardware.

What kind of lie is this? This is VGchartz! Everyone knows is "globally in the US" :p

Another super6646 bet, how many bets are you going to make?

The real question,is why he is taking so much long-term bets...:P

If xb1 can be considerably cheaper than ps4,then the possibilites winning the USA are high(Although, the cheaper price lead,I don't know if it can stay for a long time effective)...If ps4 match the price or have a price near to xb1,then xb1 has no chance to win usa,it's just a matter of price...
