Forums - Sales - 65 million Skylanders figures sold in 2014

Aren't they on a serious decline though? I thought I read somewhere that like 200m+ were sold the year before.

No, look at the post 2 spots before u.

100 million at the end of 2012

175 million at the end of 2013

240 million at the end of 2014

So it dropped from 75 million in 2013 to 65 million in 2014. Not too bad considering they have gotten competitors in Disney Infinity & Amiibo in that time frame.

That's incredibly good. :0.

Disney Infinity: Unkown.
Amiibo: Bad.

Let's hope it continues declining. The games sell like crap though. Glad I'm not a parent because kids are buying 100 each it seems. Who am I kidding, I wouldn't buy it for him/her anyway.

I wonder how much of them are actually Spyro? I'm guessing very little, since Activition butchered hin and barely makets him.

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Me!

Why is this thing selling so good??? Hell, I never saw someone buying/playing this... o.O

Considering nearly 300 different characters have been released (including variants / exclusives), only a small percentage are actually Spyro.

The first game introduced Spyro, Cynder and Sparx (from the Legend of Spyro series).  Although they have removed Spyro as the main character in the sequels, he is one of the few characters that they still market with each game.

Considering the 3D platformer market is dead right now (even Mario doesn't get the sales he once did), this is better than nothing.

You obviously don't have kids.

The game is crack for 6 - 10 year olds.  It's basically Diablo for kids.  And at the highest difficulty, it would provide a challenge for any gamer.

If I would let her, my daughter would spend her entire allowance on new characters.

RolStoppable so they are like the apple of video game kids toys.

The same business laws apply to kids and adults It seems.

There's a big difference between a video game series and smartphones though. The latter are a product of technology, so it's rather easy to maintain a consistent quality standard. Video games, on the other hand, are entertainment, so doing the same thing with incremental improvements isn't necessarily a guarantee for success as fictional universes can turn stale and boring. If I remember correctly, the sales numbers for Skylander toys have been down year over year in 2014, so a decline has already set in. 65m is still a great number, but I don't think that Skylanders will have the staying power of something like Pokémon which is approaching its 20 year anniversary.

I think Skylanders will have some staying power, Pokemon too declined from Gen 1 to Gen 2 to Gen 3 and has stayed pretty consistant from that point on. U also have to take into account competition, Disney Infinity launched in Fall 2013 and Amiibo in Fall 2014 so they now have to share the NFC figurine market with 2 other popular brands.

That's why Skylanders has been introducing a new gimmick each year to try and keep things "fresh".  Also, they have now introduced a tablet version, so that they can more easily go after the casual crowd.  I wouldn't be surprised if the tablet version becomes the lead platform in a few years.

Also, based on their infographic:

15 months to $1 billion.
28 months to $2 billion (13 months from last billion).
40 months to $3 billion (12 months from last billion).

The last billion came quicker than ever, so revenue is increasing, even though sales may be slowing down.  The figures have been going up in price each year, so that may explain these results.
