Very this. The all of it.

At first I thought yes, he was going to be silent. But a quote said that they have voice actors that you can choose when creating your protagonist. So no, but I doubt he will say much during cutscenes.
What?! I can't hear you over all this awsome! - Pyrrhon (Kid Icarus:Uprising)
Final Ultimate Legendary Earth Power Super Max Justice Future Miracle Dream Beautiful Galaxy Big Bang Little Bang Sunrise Starlight Infinite Fabulous Totally Final Wonderful Arrow...FIRE! - Wonder-Red (The Wonderful101)
I never understood the idea of a silent protagonist. I always thought it was pointless.

It would be really weird if after an hour of discovering a new world with gigantic and fantastic creatures without saying a word... he suddenly talks. I don't think so. And yes, in the gameplay they skip cutscenes where you could argue he could be talking. But if he doesn't even open his mouth when he sees that giant water dinosaur or that flying monsters... I doubt he does in the skipped cutscenes. |
The evidence is there. Fact is, you can't ignore skipped cutscenes. Since the VAs are famous, and are being revealed the way they are, they probably didn't want it spoiled so early.

I feel that a lot of voice acting ruins the characters. It all comes down to personal preference. It isn't "laziness" so much as not wanting to turn people off on a character (and potentially the entire game) because the voice acting is bad/annoying/etc. |
I can think of quite a few games myself where voice acting actually made a game worse, not better.
It's too early to tell. Cross doesn't speak in the first few cutscenes, but that doesn't mean (s)he'll be completely silent throughout the game. I expect some kind of weird curveball in this department. Especially since they did already go to the trouble of hiring a multitude of VAs and broke the character's vow of silence with battle cries.

It wouldn't have spoiled anything. The #1 voice option in the Japanese version is the Japanese voice actor for Shulk -- this is seen in the character creation tool. Showing this character speaking wouldn't have spoiled the voice actor since the character creator already spoiled it. He also spoke during battles, anyway.

Ugh I hope not, silent characters makes it hard for me to care about them.
There's no excuse for silent protagonist's in todays games. Especially in a story heavy RPG.
